Open work permit can be applied once you have been approved for PNP. You can get all the information you need at cic.gc.ca

Did anybody apply for BWP more than 4 months before the expiration date?

I think my lawyer was telling about this visa the other day. I've told him to go ahead and apply for it for me. I hope to have PR soon, but because I want out of where I am working asap and with the strikes my PR could take a while.

I've just started the process to apply for the visa. I hope to have it sent off just over 5 months before the end of my visa so I get it early.

As I understood, many have applied and got bridging open work permit > 4 months to their current work permit expiry. Only disadvantage is that bridging open work permit is valid only for 1 year. So my suggestion is to apply only if you are changing your employer.

As I'm half way through PR and with the strikes going on my PR could take a while so want to make sure I'm covered, but a change of job would be good.

Just to let you know I've submitted my application for the bridge visa today. I'll post an update once I hear something back.

My BCPNP PR is under process. I applied for BOWP on 1st Oct 2013 ( current work permit expires on 17th Feb 2014) and I received an approval email on 3rd Nov 2013.
In the email, under the 'Type" heading it says "Permit - WP-EXT / Permis - PT-PROR" so I am not sure if they extended my current work permit or its a BOWP.
I believe once I receive the hard copy I would the answer.

I received the following email from BC-PNP when I asked about switching employer once I received BOWP.


"As you are aware, the BC PNP is joint application process between the applicant and employer. You were approved based on the assessment of your current employer. If you choose to move to another employer, you will need to have that employer submit the application form and be re-assessed.

The choice is yours with an open work permit to stay or re-apply with a new employer."

From this reply I guess I wouldn't need an LMO but I would have to go through the reassessment process if I choose to switch my employer. *sigh*.

Any opinions out there ?? Has anyone switched their job while PNP-PR is under process ?

So I thought, which I could be wrong, if you get offered a new job you have to give reasons why you want to move before PNP give you a new visa, but reading the below it sounds like you have an Open permit to work for anyone as long as you stay in BC.

My BC-PNP PR application is tied to my current employer. If I choose to change my employer(new job), I have to submit documents of my new employer and then get my case reassessed by BC-PNP officer and the CIC officer.. If they approve, well and good but if they don't then they may cancel my current PR application..Also there is no approximate reassessment time period. I confirmed all this through email communication with BC-PNP.

Its a risk. It will only delay my current PR process..
So in this case the new "open" work permit doesn't really do much for me..

What do you think ?
