BOWP - How many of you have applied and received it successfully?

Hi All,

Am going to apply BOWP tomorrow. Below I want to confirm few things in my application.

1. IMM5710E - Application Form

Question 3 :Am selecting "An Initial work permit or a work permit with a new Employer"

In details intended work in canada
For 2. a) and 2. b) ,am filling as Bridge Open Work Permit - NOT APPLICABLE
For 3 to 7 - Blank

2. In Supporting Documents for Family member section, please advise what should i upload for "Family member Proof of Status"

3. Passport or Travel document, i will be uploading my passport and my canadian current work permit. please confirm this is correct?

4. Digital Phone as per the specification.

5. Under Letter of Explanation , am planning to upload below documents as a single PDF.

a. Explanation Letter
b. Copy of AOR
c. Current valid work permit
6. Fees and digital signature

Please advise above items are sufficient. Let me know if i need to take care something else apart from the above list.

You listed Work permit twice. Actually, there is no WP in document checklist, just scan of passport. There is a question about document number of your last WP in application form. I don't think you should attach it.

I applied for BOWP last January 4 and got approved Jan 14. I only submitted the application form, digital picture, passport and AOR. NO need for work permit copy.

Family member proof of status is needed only if you are not a primary applicant. In your case if you have to upload it then scan visa and wp of your family into a single PDF and upload it

Yes you can scan both into a single PDF and upload
4. Digital Phone as per the specification.
It is Digital Photo

You can have a and b in this. But work permit please attach to PDF in your passport section

6. Fees and digital signature
Fees pay online. Digital signature it will ask you to type your name online when you are uploading your documents.. All the best

I think you are good if you have taken care of all the documents mentioned in your checklist after questionnaire

For an open work permit, questions 2 to 7 in this section can be left blank. You'll notice that the form doesn't require these for "Open Work Permit" (it doesn't put an asterisk* next to these fields) but it does require them for some other kinds of permit, e.g. "Labour Market Opinion Stream".

My CIC account online shows work permit approved.. yay !! it says you will get a message with the information to collect work permit.. havent got any emails yet ? does it take a while for them to update ?

I guess it takes 2 days sometimes to receive an email.. Based on experiecen with few folks in this forum...When did you submit it? was it BOWP and was it online?.

I applied on January 5th Online. So I guess online is way faster than sending on paper and so much more easier.

My situation is as follows..
Current WHP visa expiring 19th Feb.
Hoping to apply for CEC early Feb.
Was told by CIC to change my status to visitor after the 19th.
Can I apply for BWOP on visitor status after receiving AOR?

If not, should I send the BWOP before the 19th FEB by mail ( as it takes 40 days or so ) giving me implied status and hope the AOR is in the system before they process my BWOP? or is this too risky?
What if my CEC is rejected for not being 100% etc? I know I can apply for restoration as a visitor but that could be rejected, it's not always guaranteed.
I pretty much need to act very soon as they say to change the status to visitor at 30 days before the work permit expires.

Firstly, it's BOWP, as in bridging open work permit.

The BOWP application must be made before your work permit has expired - hence the "bridging" part. The rules also specifically say you can't get the permit through restoration (see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/bulletins/2013/ob485A.asp).

If not, should I send the BWOP before the 19th FEB by mail ( as it takes 40 days or so ) giving me implied status and hope the AOR is in the system before they process my BWOP? or is this too risky?

This technique can work - I did this successfully - but it becomes a race between the people processing the AOR and the people processing the BOWP. Of course, your CEC application needs to be complete the first time, otherwise it will be returned, which means no BOWP for you.

The reported processing times for work permits are only a guide; as for AORs, no statistics are reported at all. Some of the November cohort reported receiving their AORs in as little as 30 days; some of them appear to be still waiting.

If I understand correctly, your timeline looks something like:

"Early" February: CEC application is sent
Mid February: BOWP application arrives at Vegreville by mail
19 February: Current work permit ends; implied status starts
Mid to late March: AOR is issued for the CEC application
Late March to early April: BOWP is approved or refused; implied status ends

Even with generous definitions of "early", "late", etc, there is a high probability that the AOR won't be quick enough.

Thanks very much LPS for the quick reply!
I spoke to someone from the CIC call centre a few weeks back and they had advised I change status to visitor then apply for the bridging visa once I get my AOR. Good thing I posted on here!
What if I sent my BOWP on the 18th Feb by mail? Does ot take 2 weeks to get there? or is it sooner? That would give me maximum time allowed for the AOR
Also, what if I wrote a letter pleading my case for the case worker to postpone processing of my BOWP until I get a positive AOR?
What do you suggest I take my CEC application to, to make sure it's 100%?
And if none of this is viable, what if my girlfriend marries me? I understand she would then sponsor me and that maybe takes 6 months?!
Very stressful times!
