My fiance and I would like a get married in the US and then have a formal ceremony later that same day in canada. His parents are having a f it and saying he'll be border bound in the US after for five years! Is this true? He has no record and our relationship has been established prior on both sides of the border. I don't want to get married in quebec due to the last name rul but I don't want to ser him trapped either, any advice? Thanks in advance.

Hey

Not quite sure what you mean by "border bound in the US after for five years"?

Sorry, should clarify, meaning he cannot leave the states and return to canada. Apparently his relatives know people this happened to, but I think they are just trying to scare us so we will do it there. They aren't thrilled with the idea.

They are trying to scare you. If he says he's MOVING to Canada, it raises a few red flags but otherwise he should be fine.

That's what I thought. We were going to say, "granddaughter heading there for the wedding and visiting whilst the pr application processes. Unless you have other suggestions. Thanks parker. I figured you'd know.

Quebec does not recognize marriage as a legitimate reason to change your last name. On that note, if you (the OP) are IN Quebec, getting married outside of Quebec does not help you in anyway. They still won't recognize it, nor allow you to change your surname.

Sorry for all the questions but I've never had experience with this before but when I get married in the US and then change my name and my passport, which I had planned to do, since we are landing in Ontario first. What happens then? We are going there for my schooling and job opportunities. What if we decide to move here later? My pr and SIN will have already be issued in my married name. I am aware of the common use rule.

Ok. They are still scared. Someone told them (his family )and our minister told his family that you have to send in the pr application before we can get married or I will get deported after three months and we both get a five year ban to travel to the others country. Apparently this has happened to people they know But from what I've seen on the cic website. That's not how it works. With neither of us having criminal records and neither having red flags of any kind, is this remotely possible? I'd really like to put this to bed. It's getting very stressful. Plus I have wedding and school stress to deal with. Can I get it in writing from the cic or something so they won't worry? Before I go nuts or bald. :-X

What you're hearing from your family and friends is total nonsense.

Get married then apply for PR.

You'll be just fine :)

This probably isn't going to happen, but to ease their minds a little you could send them links to the CIC website so they can get their information from the horses mouth rather than idle gossip. You could also send them links to this thread and the forum. With a little research it's easy to verify that what they're telling you isn't true.

Families worry. When I came to Canada my mom thought I was going to be sold as a sex slave and called interpol lol. It's just what families do. Don't let it stress you out, and just focus on planning an awesome wedding. (Then apply for PR :) )

Good luck.

You can't apply married if you aren't married. We got married in Sept of 2011 and applied March of 2012. Hubby was here since May 2011 and landed as a PR Jan 2013. Have them come here and read some things, it will calm them down.

Where do these people get this total nonsense?? That's some pretty crazy stuff they are trying to tell you! Maybe sit them down and go through this forum and the CIC website with them.

As the others have said, get married, then apply for PR. Nobody will be deported and neither of you will be banned from the other country provided you both maintain legal status (ie, extend tourist visas as needed).

Just ignore all of the negativity and have a beautiful and happy wedding!!!! ;D

Thanks guys(gals ;)) I really needed that. I thought so. I may even talk to the people who were telling them this stuff. And get the names of the people this happened to. I know one of them is a practical joker and our minister knows him also. Won't cause trouble mind you but maybe he'll fess up :( ??? Either way I will show both my fiance and his parents the links. My fiance is aware what is going on as fat as the rules but if he has actual facts they may stop and realize they were snookered.
