Bill C-6: Senate stage

Well Art Eggleton says there should be an amendment, but naturally they will need some days to table that amendment (find the right wording etc). Also note that one forum member was at the committee meeting and talked to the minister and senators who said that there will be an amendment. That info is better than any guessing on our part.

I was just watching the Committee Session and I think the bill has been adopted without any amendments.

Bill C-6 is reaching the last stages of becoming a law. However, there still a few more steps that need to be fulfilled before it reaches Royal Assent. Just to explain the Third Reading for those interested:

Third Reading is technically the Final approval of the bill. The three possibilities at this stage are:

1- Senators can propose amendments.
2- Senators vote on the bill and its amendments.
3- If it passes, it is sent to the HoC

If amendments are introduced and voted for, then HoC and Senate exchange messages until they agree on the final text of the bill.

Of course each step requires time, and each further delay attempt from Conservative Senators will slow the process. But the most crucial part is done.

Can you tell how many votes were in favor of various clauses of the bill and how many against?Will give us some indication of how much strength the CONS have left to fight their last remaining chance at the third reading.

There was only two votes which were counted, on the revocation for terrorism parts. The votes were 8 to 5 and 9 to 4 or something. But I might be off by some numbers. If you want to know for sure, you can watch the video.

This is getting frustrating. OK, one more time:

Just because there was no amendments made in committee, that doesn't mean that senators won't propose an amendment during third reading back in the Senate. In fact one Senator basically announced that there will be an amendment proposed.

It was pretty obvious for any of us who have been following the proceedings the past few months that they will amend the appeal process procedure.

I do not believe that this will take much time. By end of March, it will pass the senate. Then HoC will also pass but will depend on when it read. Then royal assent. I expect 2-3 months for it to become law.
If the liberals are serious, they will implement it within a month or two or could be jan 2018 which is likely more realistic.

You are mixing two concepts:

The minister is against revoking citizenship for terrorism and similar crimes. (National Post Article)

The minister is in favour of revoking citizenship for fraud during the PR or citizenship application. This kind of revocation has been there for decades. (Article that you shared)

Only this second kind of revocation is what all this appeals process discussion is about.

Also I believe the amendment will be worked on by senate and minister together so that the bill passes quickly on both chambers. That is the impression I got from the minister yesterday.
I am trying to be optimistic .

who is the sponsor for this amendment? why didn't prepare it in the committee? libs Or cons.?
