Senate sitting started, so far talking about how great the new Senators are
... followed by a Senator addressing an issue of her country of origin (Burma/myanmar I think) and how the Buddhists and Muslims have issues
.. the discussions are suspended for now until they fix a technical issue, I think translation problem
.. Discussing NAFTA and Trump now
..

I always have a question and now would like to share it with you....

Is the 30 minutes question period that important to allocate it every sitting, is it more important than discussing bills and deciding on laws!!!!

Very good question, I do not have an answer though. I still fail to see the value the Senate brings to the whole process compared to the HofC. I hope someone else can make a better input to respond to your question, I am curious too.

just like they always say ....Welcome to the senate of Canada .. they have most likely one of the best working conditions ever , the only thing that seems to be missing is EFFICIENCY ... The order of the day is a million pages long .. and every word that comes out of the mouths is STAND !!
I don't yet see the way they organize the whole pattern .. in terms what is urgent and what is not ...

The question is do they organize in level of urgency?

"We are not a new layer of the civil service with Senator Harder at our head. We are not a $90-million debating club. We are not a council of elders. We are not some sort of advisory panel," Cowan said.

Yes you are. In fact, you're much worst than that in terms of your foreseeable performance you excellency Senators. Luckily you that you didn't use unparliamentarily language, we were to read (from you mouth) very bad words like s**t... f**k ... b***s.....etc

He states what they are not, but does not state what they are, or what they are supposed to be. Makes you wonder if even the Senators know what is the point of the Senate .. other than a big fat cheque and pension.

One does wonder if a system like Canada's really needs the Senate. The original British concept of having a House of Lords hosting honorable high class members, who volunteer to sit to ensure the decisions made are the right ones for the good of the country, that whole idea changed now. A Senator's position became a career position with good salary and more than ideal pension; and all Senators seem to have belonged to the middle class at some point in their lives. I am just trying to get my head around what does the Senate add that the House of Commons lacks. At least MPs are in their positions because they were elected by their constituents.

I would like to see the Senators elected by the people rather than arbitrarily appointed by someone.
Senate in Canada is essential a big tea house, people get paid for life to chat in the house but don't have any noble spirit as it's designed from British origin and are not accountable for any of their actions. Political lottery for anyone who wins to be chosen as a Senator.

Would really like to see the same constitutional referendum next month in Italy to limit Senate power someday happens in here.

What happened just right now at the Senate is a factual example of their nasty performance.

Only a few Senators said "Nay" versus a strong voice from majority saying "Yaaa" so, two stood to vote on division for bill S-3..... Then, the bell rang for a 15 minutes (pauuuuuuuuuse) to call the Senators for voting...... What the heck !!!????

Honestly, I turned it off a few minutes ago, listening to them seemed like a waste of time.

At least we are not surprised anymore. I wonder if one could reach Omidvar and ask her on the progress so far, she might be the key person at this stage.

the senate lacks transparency of their business. I assumed that they are working out something privately but ordinary people don't know. good idea if key person like the sponsor of the bill could feel for our immigrants' anxieties and update the progress.
