I will be applying under the new rules unless they bring in a transition period and will gladly sign any document saying that I "intend to reside" because I've made Canada my home and love it here.

I was just trying to make the point with a bit of humour; but obviously badly and insensitively, that I could understand why someone from a potentially unstable part of the world would want to get a passport of convenience "just in case".

I wasn't agreeing that it was right, which is why I agree with the clause being brought in.
Please let us all follow this link and vote against this bill http://www.change.org/en-IN/petitions/hon-chris-alexander-pc-mp-canadian-government-stop-bill-c-24-don-t-turn-millions-of-us-into-second-class-canadian-citizens?recruiter=67291139&utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition

You are assuming that preparation for the Bill C-24 becoming law hasn't already started. It may well be the case that systems are already being put in place and all CIC needs to do is click a switch. Don't assume anything at this point.
CIC's Twitter now looks more like it's a Conservatives' PR agency, what a shame: https://twitter.com/CitImmCanada/status/472103045552435200

I have travelled a lot and observed politics from a distance in countries I have worked in, watching politics in Canada since I moved here, unfortunately since King Harper got his majority is like watching a horror movie. Harper is so fixated with immigration and immigrants because conservitives know xenophobia is a hit with their racist base. These farcical changes in this new bill has nothing to do with strengthening citizenship, it's meant to make it difficult for majority people of colour from becoming citizen, that's is the main purpose of the bill. Apart from refugees due to Canada noble tradition of helping people from war torn countries, it is very difficult to migrate to Canada as Canadian visa requirement is very strict. some nonentities here like Torontosm or Harper conservatives lapdogs will make you believe Canada issue Citizenship like Candies. In my opinion Bill C-24, which is so wacked will pass HoC and Senate without a single support from Liberal and NDP as King Harper Caucasus are like trained Seal however the law will be dealt a serious blow by Supreme Court on 9-0 decision.

Hi guys,

I am wondering and hopefully someone can clarify this....I came to Canada as a refugee claimant and was granted convention refugee status in 2011. I finally got PR status in Feb 2013. I become eligible unfortunately probably too late which is in Feb 2015. Now, this is my question. Since Canada gave me protected person status (convention refugee) would they in the future be able to strip me citizenship?? I do of course have the INTENT to reside in Canada as I do love it here. BUT for those in the same position as me, does this government see it as a possibility to strip former refugees of citizenship?? If so then they will be making stateless people as refugees cannot obviously go back to where they came from!

Severely disappointed in the government. Do they not know they are creating a HUGE population of people that will never vote for them??

"Guys Long live the queen, we need to send her majesty the petition"

I think this is a great idea rather than sending the petition to parliament, which is hardly going to make a difference it should be sent to the queen. May be she gets interested to spark a discussion with government on this issue.

This issue requires big media attention. Once this issue is common in public domain the government is bound to listen to the genuine objections to the bill.

Precarious citizenship - The proposed overhaul of the Citizenship Act isn't likely to survive a constitutional challenge, say immigration lawyers.

You are right. This is not a constitutionally required step neither part of any process to pass the bill but the objective is to bring the attention of general public and media towards the bill. On second thought, I think that a copy of the petition should be sent to Governor General of Canada also. This is just my view :(

Harper is bringing racism back to Canada and this will only make Canada weaker in the global world of competition. His anti-immigration policy means all the future most talented scientists, researchers, large investors from globe will be discouraged and will look to the other country for their future research, study and investment.

I only can predict, in coming years Canada will see more un-employment, less business activities and therefore, Canada's position as prosperous country will be far behind of other countries. Within next 20 years in Canada's two largest economical city Toronto and Vancouver, white will be minority which means we will see non white PM, Maximum MPs, Govt. Federal govt. etc.. Canada's white population is shrinking and this could be another reason to make citizenship rule tougher by this conservative govt. (like Bush era) so that less immigrant will be granted as new citizens.

Look, the Queen won't do anything -- if she did, it would spark a constitutional crisis.

I feel like the vote on sending the bill to the committee has finally moved us past the first stage of grief (denial), and now we're at the second (anger), with an advanced few already at #3 (bargaining).

Followed, inevitably, by stages #4 (depression) and #5 (acceptance).

Guys, the queen's mandate is to shop for cute hats and to secure work-free lives for her posterity :). Nobody asks her anything. The next step is to go to the Wizard of Oz I suppose :).

On-hold, you were hoping for a scandal (I think it was you), maybe this has some potential:

Nah, real scandals never happen between people at the centre (Harper) and people on the periphery (Canadian Muslims). Scandals are when something goes down between two folks who are both connected -- like this thing in the Senate, or the Supreme Court mess, etc. Anyway, because of the bill's short time-line, it's too late for anything but the most dreadful scandal to shake the government, realistically we have to hope for some gross revelation from Duffy . . .
