Best way to apply - need OHIP by mid July if possible

My wife is a US citizen. We were married in October 2015. She is now 13 weeks pregnant with a due date of end July 2016.

Im looking for suggestions as to the fastest/best way to apply in order to get health coverage before delivery. At this stage i have everything gather except for FBI clearance (recd by FBI on Dec 1) and option C printout (should be arriving this week).

Normally i read outland is better, but with inland i read can get an openwork permit which is I believe part of triggering OHIP. although even still it seems she needs a position plus the 3 months requirement which I dont know when that starts from.

Suggestions/thoughts?

I don't think it's feasible.

Inland is out. The processing times are too long and we already know that Ontario does not grant OHIP access when the open work permit is granted at the four month mark. If she goes inland, she won't qualify for OHIP until AIP at the 16 month mark.

I don't see how you can make it work with outland. Problem #1 is that she won't have OHIP coverage until three months after she becomes a PR. This means that she would need to have PR approved by end of April. Very few applications are being processed that quickly. Has she already completed the medical? If not, that's going to be another problem.

You need to assume she won't have OHIP in time and go for Plan B.

Sorry - I take part of my statement back. I don't think anyone from the US is getting through outland in three months (I think some are getting through in 4).

Anyway - it doesn't really change the answer. I think it's a complete no-go. You need to consider other options.

It's possible to get by July but by no means a guarantee. We applied last March and my husband had his COPR by the end of June. So, the only suggestion I have is to have a backup plan, but fill out a succinct, complete outland application with everything up front and cross your fingers.

The other problem will be the medical , since she is pregnant they may not do it , then they won't have a complete medical for the application. If your not a Canadian citizen you then will have to add your son to the application if he or she is not born in Canada. If you can get your wife here and registrar with a midwife it would keep the cost of having a baby here lower.

wow very quick! wish its like that for us. Not much of a backup plan but to be out of pocket. Trying our best to do a complete application.

Fortunately our medical is done back in October. And I am a Canadian citizen.

She is here, but midwife was a no go.

I agree, I don't think it's feasible. In Ontario, you'd need the COPR 3 months BEFORE the end of July, which isn't going to happen. Why is midwife a no-go, complicated pregnancy?? Is delivery in the U.S. feasible?? Start saving five grand now!!

BTW, I DO feel your pain. My wife's OHIP card arrived with only a month to spare before giving birth (which ended up being a "CS", no less).

Yes, agreed. 3 months before mid-July would be mid-April. That would mean COPR in less than 3 months, and that is if the application was filed today. This is too soon, even for the most optimistic US outland timelines.

Sponsor approval alone takes 2 months, before CPC-Ottawa would even receive the app. So you would need CPC-O to process the applicant in just a few weeks, which is basically not possible.

If having the baby in Canada without using a midwife, you should budget $10K to be safe.

Does the OP's wife have any medical coverage in US. It is a lot cheaper to pay the 20% coverage than to pay 5-10G in Canada. A few applicants from US have some form of medical coverage in US. Is this a possible scenario to consider?
