Hey all

Wondering if anyone else has some experience to share on getting a drivers license in BC.

Do you have to be "Landed" to receive your drivers license or can I take my COPR into ICBC and my US license and get it switched over?

If you have a permit, I was told you can!

Permit as in the bigger piece of paper that requires folding in to your passport, as opposed to a visa.

I think this will probably be more helpful to you than my personal experience:

http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t184207.0.html

I got my permit at a border after a border crossing scare ::) It basically allows me to stay in Canada longer than six months without having to rely on having implied status.

I originally went to get my license with my visa, passport, and marriage license in hand and they told me to come back once i have a permit.

Let me know if you still need more info, I have more at home but I think the topic for BC inlanders would be more resourceful.

I'm in BC and it was a nightmare to get a licence, mainly because ICBC can't tell their arse from their elbow. CORP alone is not accepted according to their website, but I know of someone who managed to get it with CORP+a credit card of all things...

Here's the link with all the forms of ID that they accept.

http://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/visit-dl-office/Pages/Accepted-ID.aspx

If you have a visitor record, you can also get your licence with it.

Confirmation of permanent resident IMM5292 or IMM5688 are not accepted as primary ID

Also, be aware that you will need to prove that you have at least 2 years of driving experience in the US, so make sure you get your hands on your driving record before you move.

True, but some states (like California) have driving information available to ICBC electronically...no need to request a driving abstract. :)

I'm already in Canada *sigh* have been since last year.

So even though I've had my current License since 2011 I have to have a driving record??

Check the ICBC website, even drivers from countries that have a reciprocal agreement with Canada need to prove previous driving experience, in writing or electronically as the other member has mentioned. Otherwise you'll have to go through that retarded graduated system and it'll take you 3 years min. to get a full licence.

I'm on a British passport and recently got an extension as a visitor for 1 year (currently applying for PR).
This is okay to get the BC licence.
