Hello all,

My boyfriend is a Malaysian citizen. He is hoping to visit Canada this year on a visitor's visa (temporary resident's visa) for the purpose of tourism. In order to apply for a visa, he needs to send in with his application "proof of means of financial support." One of the acceptable documents is a bank draft in a convertible currency. Can someone please explain this to me? What kind of bank draft would he ask for at the bank? Who would he have it addressed to? From what I understand, the Malaysian Ringgit is NOT a convertible currency. In this case, is it possible to have a bank draft drafted by the Malaysian bank into a convertible currency? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. :)

Hi,

Proof of financial support is part of the requirements for a visitor visa, but the specification of it being "a bank draft in convertible currency" does not show up as part of the visitor visa application. You may want to check the requirements again - I see this particular requirement of having a "bank draft in convertible currency" under an application for a study visa, not a visitor visa.
Document Checklist for a TRV: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5484E.pdf
Applying for a TRV: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/apply-how.asp

If your BF sends in an application to the office handling visa applications for MY (it will be likely the HC in SG), the listed country specific-requirements are (for the funds/financial):
http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/singapore-singapour/visas/52_1.aspx
Proof of sufficient funds to cover expenses for the duration of your visit:
- Bank documents (e.g. fixed deposits, bank statements showing financial history and the account balance over - the last three (3) months)
- Evidence of assets in country residence (e.g. property ownership, proof of pension, investments, etc.)
- If you are not paying for your own trip, indicate how your trip will be funded and submit supporting documentation (e.g. parents’ bank documents, letter from employer covering costs, etc.)

.../hope that helps

dear all

No, the above requirement is for visitors visa and not for study visa. For study visa the students have the facility of opening GIC account in the country of choice, but visitors are not permitted to open account in Canada, hence the online requirement they ask is Bank draft in convertible currency, here convertible currency means that one should get the draft in Canadian dollar. I also need the same for my visitor visa for Canada.
