I perfectly understand the dilemma you're in now - as life must go on. So, here's my advice.
1. Make sure that there is someone trustworthy in Damascus to receive all of your mails as you don't want to miss any correspondence from the consular office while you are in Canada. If such a person exists then by all means you can go to Canada.
I sincerely hope that this is not a case where you have traveled out of Damascus at anytime between February and now and might have missed a correspondence from your Consul. Hopefully, this is not the case.
2. Since you have a 1 year multiple entry visa, you can do your medicals in Canada - hopefully, you will not require any medical follow-ups, we all pray for that - inshallah (God Willing or By God's Grace).
3. As you may already know, the entire processing time for Damascus is more than 5 years; in fact between 5 and a half years to 6 years. Since your application started in February of 2002, plus you have done the crucial background checks, you will probably receive the PR visa stamp by mid-2008. Between now and the end of the year, you will hear from them with regard to the medical.
4. If things work out and you get the faculty job, then it means that you will have a work permit. If the work permit and a longer TRV materialize, and you know that you will be in Canada for a while, then you should inform the Damascus Consular office about this and your new address in Canada.
Do not do any change of address with your Consular office on the 1-year multiple entry visa.
You can do a change of address with your Consular when both your work permit and TRV have both been approved.
5. Don't forget that for each visit on your multiple entry visa, you are allowed, possibly, up to 90 days in Canada. And, you must file for an extension at least 30 days before your stay expires while in Canada, if you believe you need more time to do your affairs.
