Hey Guys,,

I applied for the PR in Damascuss in Sept 2002, i got an interview waiver last year, they asked me for the Background checks and i send all the paper in Feb 2007 and Iam still waiting till now, I already went to Canada three times and all my family are living in Canada, I dont understand why this background checks take sooo much.

If anyone has any idea about when the background checks finished, or may be the average time for the bakground checks to be finished? i will appreciate your reply

take care

You are at the finishing stages. They will be getting in touch with you soon.

If they have not yet asked for proof of funds, then the next step will be to request for your proof of funds as well as to pay the Right of Permanent Residence Fee, and the last step would be to request for your passport for the Visa stamp.

Well, maybe Damascus is different from the U.S. In my case, CIC sent me the request for both the Background check and the Medical exam at the same time.

You will definitely hear from them before the end of the year.

I don't know what you mean by: "I have to arrange my trip to Canada." If you are talking about when you land then you will always have time to plan your landing. Don't worry about that now. Now, it's first things first - and that is to finish the process up to the stamping of the visa.

If you are talking about traveling to Canada soon on a visitor's visa, then I would advice you to wait or hold off on any travel plans until you've heard from them. Otherwise, if you have no trouble going back and forth to Canada now, then you can always have your medicals done in Canada, but remember that if future follow-ups are required, it means you will have to come back to the Canadian doctor assuming there are not visa restraints. If you are talking about traveling to Canada, also make sure that you are in a position to receive all correspondences that CIC would send to you while you are not in Damascus.

I perfectly understand the dilemma you're in now - as life must go on. So, here's my advice.

1. Make sure that there is someone trustworthy in Damascus to receive all of your mails as you don't want to miss any correspondence from the consular office while you are in Canada. If such a person exists then by all means you can go to Canada.

I sincerely hope that this is not a case where you have traveled out of Damascus at anytime between February and now and might have missed a correspondence from your Consul. Hopefully, this is not the case.

2. Since you have a 1 year multiple entry visa, you can do your medicals in Canada - hopefully, you will not require any medical follow-ups, we all pray for that - inshallah (God Willing or By God's Grace).

3. As you may already know, the entire processing time for Damascus is more than 5 years; in fact between 5 and a half years to 6 years. Since your application started in February of 2002, plus you have done the crucial background checks, you will probably receive the PR visa stamp by mid-2008. Between now and the end of the year, you will hear from them with regard to the medical.

4. If things work out and you get the faculty job, then it means that you will have a work permit. If the work permit and a longer TRV materialize, and you know that you will be in Canada for a while, then you should inform the Damascus Consular office about this and your new address in Canada.

Do not do any change of address with your Consular office on the 1-year multiple entry visa.

You can do a change of address with your Consular when both your work permit and TRV have both been approved.

5. Don't forget that for each visit on your multiple entry visa, you are allowed, possibly, up to 90 days in Canada. And, you must file for an extension at least 30 days before your stay expires while in Canada, if you believe you need more time to do your affairs.
