The timeline to get the citizenship certificate is not 12-18 months in most cases. We were told the same thing, but 3 months later we had it. The passport took 1 month, but that was only because we didn't have a guarantor. If you have a guarantor, it only takes a couple of weeks.

For the citizenship certificate, it's not Islamabad that processes it, so I don't understand why you say it's so slow. The application is sent to Nova Scotia for processing. As for the passport, I think it's the same thing...they are not processed at the Embassy...but I might be wrong.

You're looking at a total time of approximately 4 months for the citizenship cert and passport. But like PMM said, you can get a passport for children under 2 in a very short time as long as you have proof of travel (i.e. airline tickets).

Your visa office is hong Kong.. mine is Islamabad n Leon is right Islamabad is slow.
I called chc I they said I should send citizenship certificate n passport forms together to Islamabad n also they said they will process it.
MY question is did the CHC-I call center guy gave me wrong information?

Also should I send all the docs of my baby to my husband in Canada and get citizenship certificate made in Canada? wil canada also issue a canadian pp for my baby? considering the baby is wth me in pakistan.

THANKS alot.

You can not guarantee that another persons process will be as fast as yours, especially if they are applying through a different visa office but even if it is the same one, every case is different. The official processing time for a citizenship certificate can be seen here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/canada/certif-processing.asp and it is now 5 months for 80% of cases if applied for in Canada and they say to add 3-4 months when applying through a visa office. Islamabad is a notoriously slow visa office.

Can my husband apply in Canada for baby's passport and certificate? is that an option for me?

Perhaps I stand corrected then...but as far as I know, citizenship certs get processed in Nova Scotia, Canada...NOT abroad. Same thing is true for passports...NOT abroad (but I may be wrong about that).

And no, the office that handled everything was in Guangzhou, not Hong Kong. And all they did was check to make sure that I included all relevant documents, then sent it to Canada on my behalf...that's the extent of it...aside from checking our marriage license, our son's birth cert, and a couple of IDs to verify I am a citizen.

I guess Pakistan does things a bit differently?

Yes they do.. and they arent very helpful and I ve loads of queries and Islamabad hasnt replied to emails.
and If i sent incomplete docs they wont process my application.

For a citizenship card, something must be done by the embassy because they say on the CIC website that applying through a visa office adds 3-4 months to the processing time.

I suppose because your husband is in Canada and he is authorized to apply for the baby that he could choose to apply through Canada instead of Islamabad but if you apply through Islamabad, you can apply for a temporary passport at the same time which will allow you to travel with your baby. If you apply through Canada, you would have to wait until you get the citizenship card and then apply for a normal passport for the baby.

Do you think that Islamabad will take longer than 5 months to issue a temporary passport for the baby? How soon do you want to travel?

If you want to avoid Islamabad at all cost, your husband should first go to the passport office and ask them if there is a problem applying for a passport for a baby which is outside the country. If they say he can, he can apply for the citizenship card from within Canada first which will take around 5 months and then he can apply for the passport and bring it or mail it to you.

I want to travel asap..
also I wanted to share wth you tht my husband contacted MP n they said since I ve PR visa if I send my babys birth certificate they wil issue facilitation visa for my baby so tht v can travel. but since you informed me tht its not possible for me to get. But MP in Canada told my husband its possible..Im stil confuse. I ve email chc-I but they havent replied me yet.

You won't be able to travel ASAP. It will take time to get the citizenship cert...or if you are going the route of getting a temp passport for your baby, expect about a month wait.

Good luck and I hope you can get things sorted quickly!
