Can one carry a 10-month old baby in lap (in the back seat) when in a car in Ontario? Or is it a must that the infant be seated in his/her own crib?

I am not sure about Ontario but in US you need a rear facing infant car seat for baby below 1 year and front facing car seat for baby over 1 year. Google for there DMV site

I just googled -->

I am afraid you have start saving some money to buy a baby seat if you want to drive on Canadian roads. So, start saving now.

For the childs own safety, it would be wise to invest in a baby seat whether it is or is not a legal requirement.

When a baby was born two years back, in our family at Toronto, the hospital staff asked to bring the baby seat before discharging the mother and baby. One guy at the hospital demonstrated how to position the infant safely on the car seat.
As per my knowledge no one is allowed in Ontario to ride in a car with a baby on the lap.

There r very inconvenient but tight rules in Canada, as if u are not at all concerned about your child's saftey and a baby seat means a guaranteed survival of your child even in the most severe accident of crushing car also as if no baby seat means guaranteed death of child if it is in mother's lap even in smallest accident. But if u ask such questions here, there are many here (slave of British Crown) saying u that money is more important for u than child's safety. Tough your concern is child's convenience and the 'warmth' to your child. But they have plastic minds so they prefer plastic baby seat instead of mother's loving hand. Even in animals, mother will die but save her child who is in her hands. But it CANADIAN safety standards! If anyone from ur adjoining car looks a 'free' child in the car, he will call 111 and on the next point cop will issue a ticket for being careless mother!

You mean in this thread? Well, its neither of the above. We are talking about having children and the hassle that they bring.
