Dear all
For exchange of german driving license into canadian I read a requirement of authentication letter which is difficult to get here in Germany. Please suggest what is alternative to it.

German authorities are very difficult.I asked them for this letter they told me you have valid driving license what else you need.

Please suggest what to do i am flying to canada next week.
How long can I drive with gERMAN LICENSE WITHOUT EXCHANGE.Should i get international license that has validity for 3 years.

Please guide.
Very tense and occupied with prepartion of landing in Canada

Regards

You should keep a translation in English ( or French ) of your German licence.
Generally driving licence rules vary according to the Province. If you are going to be a resident in Ontario,( in other provinces also ) you can use your German driver's licence for up to 60 days after you land in Ontario. If you want to keep driving in Ontario, you must get an Ontario driver's licence.
To lean about the Reciprocal exchange agreement between Ontario and other Countries, read this link:

http://www.drivetest.ca/en/license/OutOfCountryDrivers.aspx

If the local police (Polizeiamt) cannot issue an authentication document that indicates your identity, years of driving experience (first DL issuance) and vehicle category, you can, if a German citizen, apply for "Bescheinigung" to the German embassy/consulate after you've landed.

http://www.canada.diplo.de/Vertretung/kanada/de/03/willkommen__in__kanada/fuehrerscheinumtausch.html

Pls beware that any translation from German into English (if your documents are not in English) for driver's licence purposes MUST be performed by a provincially certified translator in Canada - e.g. for Ontario it would be ATIO (Association of translators and interpreters in Ontario) certified translators. DriveTest issuance offices won't accept affidavit translations from Germany.

hi there,

as for quebec,(montreal) where I am, here the address to "Reciprocal Exchange Drivers License" or just apply for a DL.

http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/search/find_service.php
http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/driver_licence/exchange/index.php

and you can get it translated here

www.asiatis.ca german-french translation, certified! (used it for immigration) 48$ per document. Almost 48h service!

hope it helps....
