You should apply for extending you status, if I understand well it's better not fall out of status if you want to apply for OWP. Correct me if I am wrong. Thank you

You should apply to extend your stay before your visitor status expires. It's important to remain with a legal status if you want to apply for OWP after AOR.
Otherwise, you won't be able to apply for OWP until your status is restored or until the application reach AIP (very late in the sponsorship application) which is almost pointless of apply for OWP because at that point your PR may likely be approved before your OWP.
