Fingerprinting is part of the first level background check (RCMP, national level), simultaneously criminality checks are completed (By CSIS via national & international database) . Only after these two checks are done your application gets transferred to your local office where the rest of the process is completed.
This could actually cause a slight delay in your application processing since FP request means your file is considered Non-Routine. Wish you the best.

I moved to another province after submitting the citizenship application. Change of residence is not mentioned in the link, but I think this is the reason for an early fingerprint request. Thanks for the answer.
