My girlfriend is Brazilian and residing in the USA awaiting a ruling on her asylum petition (which is likely a few years away). She would like to come to Canada to study English. Will Canada refuse her a study permit as a result of her seeking asylum in the USA?

Yes, you should expect that Canada will refuse the study permit due to her status in the USA.

Would it make any difference if she left the USA (and abandoned the asylum petition) and returned to Brazil before applying for the study permit?

Most likely not since she would have to declare the US refugee claim.

How will my spousal sponsorship of her be affected by her asylum application?
There shouldn't be any impact provided you have strong evidence to show a genuine relationship and as long as she is honest about her status in the US.

In terms of sponsoring your future spouse would suggest spending time in person over multiple visits if you want to sponsor her. Canada likes to see time spent in person especially if there is more scrutiny because your future spouse has been trying to secure a future out of Brazil.
