Hi,
My friend claimed asylum in USA, did her asylum interview last year January and the decision is still pending for almost a year now. She wants to claim asylum in Canada because she’s having a severe life threat in her birth country. She went through lots of torture in her birth country.

My question is “will she able to claim asylum in Canada by traveling through a travel document” ?
FYI she doesn’t have any relations in Canada but only a friend is there.

I will really appreciate if anyone reply to this.

Thank You.
Hi , I left USA and I Abandoned my case and now I come to Canada and claim for refugee here , it’s more then 2 years that my case is pending for final decision after interview in USA . I came to Canada because of my family they are in vary bad situation in my country .

Do you have a question? If it’s about processing times. About 2 years or more.

The government is now closing that loophole of asylum shopping

I suspect that between this bill and attempts to renegotiate the Safe Third Country agreement, the liberals have identified immigration as a hot topic for the upcoming election. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a few more similar adjustments to policy/legislation for some of the obvious avenues of abuse before the fall to satisfy some of the voting public.

I think it’s also in reaction to what’s happening on the USA’s southern border . Thousands every month are claiming asylum at those POE ‘S , once they do that, make the claim , they then are released to await their hearing. This change would effectively then block these individuals from making their way up too the northern border and reclaiming asylum in Canada. where the support system is more generous then what is offered in the USA

It will take 2-3 years to process your asylum claim in Canada. Your family won't be able to come to Canada until after your asylum claim has been processed - so unfortunately you are looking at being separated from them for another few years.

To add a bit more, your reunion with your family will either be here or back in your home country where you will be deported to if your claim fails. The USA will not let you return to their country to continue your claim and your claim here is weakened due to asylum shopping.
