Are recruitment agencies any good?

I have read countless posts about migrants encountering challenges when searching for a job within their field. My luck when I landed in Canada was good when registering with an employment agency. They found me work fast and within my field (white-collar). How's other people's luck when they went to job agencies? Please share your experiences.

It has to do with luck, cause it depends on the recruiter you are gonna get. Some care only for their commission and try to place you wherever, while others really try to get you the best position possible. I don't think it has to do strictly with the recruitment agency but with the recruiter himself.

Just to let you know Malfoy, Recruitment agencies are not allowed to charge you any fees for recruitment services if you are the job seeker!

Hello. Thank you for sharing information. Please share the link or name of the recruitment agency in canada and which state?

I need another advise concerning which location (city) is offering more opp for new migrants from under developed countries such as Pakistan. i heard Toronto and BC has high unemployment rate but at the same time, does it have more opp for internationals? Or should we consider ALBERTA for exploring jobs?

Thank you

I was living in Ontario but Alberta has a much lower unemployment rate. Then again, it's cost of living is higher, from what I have heard. BC has a slightly better unemployment rate than To

The list simonvee provided is for people who have already landed in Canada and become permanent residents - and are allowed to work in Canada.

These agencies don't deal with individuals who don't yet have authorization to work in Canada.

Best way is to apply to companies directly. Too many agencies are scams.

It is a very rare case requiring very specific skill or family/friendly connections with the management of the company. I only saw it once - a chinese woman got job at a university in Alberta after finishing PhD at an Ivy League university despite having no work authorization.

As per Scylla's remark, the best way to get a job if you require sponsorship is to apply directly. However. This is not a case of firing off your resume to every company - you will need to either be specialist (and therefore have skills that are in demand or work in a small industry) or you will need to be very well networked. Another way is to get an internal transfer with your current company (assuming they have a location in Canada).

This is coming from someone who worked in a niche market as a corporate recruiter and was offered a job to move to a competitor in Canada.

Most companies won't pay a recruitment agency fee for an LMO candidate unless it's a retained international search and the company knows they have to bring in international talent. That work is quite niche so the high street agencies (Randstaad, Adecco etc) will unlikely take this kind of work on.

My advice? Look realistically at your options - if you can come over here on your own means then do it - whether it be study, working holiday visa etc etc. If those aren't options, work out how to market yourself to companies using your network.

Hope this helps
