Hi!
A few more questions again! Will I need to have that certificate when we land to Canada? Does it stay valid for a long time? And do I really need to apply for my daughter to have a Canadian passport? Can she land with her British passport + her citizenship certificate?

Thanks again!

She doesn't need to have a citizenship certificate to land in Canada but it would help to have her temporary passport so they don't enter her in the system as a visitor and might end up causing some kind of confusion later. The citizenship certificate doesn't have an expiry date but it takes about 10 months to get right now so you should def. talk to the embassy about the temporary passport.

Thank you for your reply Leon. I have filled in the forms and ready to send the application for proof of citizenship but I am a little confused with the supporting documents. www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/CIT0001E4.asp

you were born outside Canada to a Canadian parent on or after January 1, 1947

•A birth certificate which lists your parents (issued by responsible government authorities in the country where you were born)
•Proof that one or both of your natural parents were Canadian citizens when you were born
Two (2) pieces of personal identification, such as a driver’s licence and a health insurance card
•Other documents, such as a marriage certificate/divorce certificate and/or a legal name change certificate (if applicable)

What ID can a child provide other than her passport? There is no health insurance card in the UK so she doesn't have a card.
Anyone please help??!!

Just send your own instead and letter explaining that the baby does not have any ID. I'm sure it'll work. Most babies don't have ID cards.

You don't show the babies ID its is your own ID. Your passport and something with a signature and/or photo. IE your drivers licence, credit card... The babies birth certificate is needed to show both parents. ALSO, if you can I would go to the Canadian Embassy to submit it directly to them not mail it. They will give you a receipt and don't expect anything for 10-12 months. Another thing I suggest is put a copy of the receipt and form with your application to show you have applied for the cdn citizenship for your child. It shows another intention to establish yourself in Canada. You don't need a letter to send with the application as they are aware of the procedure for babies. One more thing, I was told by the Canadian Embassy here that if you choose to, you can get a temporary travel visa for the child by showing that you have already filed for the citizenship and that it is in process. Hope this helps! I received my kids' cards last October after 11 months.

Thanks Boncuk! It's unbelievable that it takes that long! The Canadian Embassy is a bit far from where we live but I'll try my hardest to go to in person.

A last question! When they ask for Certified Copies, it has to be sign by

•a foreign service officer
•a judge
•a magistrate
•a notary public
•an officer of a court of justice
•a person authorized to administer oaths in the country in which the person is living

how do you get these people to do that? You just turn up a the Court and ask a judge??!! (Only kidding!) But seriously does that include doctors, police officer and other professionals like that?

Sorry I know I'm asking silly questions but I really don't know how and who to ask!?

Im sorry I'm not sure what you need certified copies of? Is it because you would be mailing in your application? If that's the case it's like a guarantor.
Who can certify my identity documents?
Only people who hold the following positions can certify copies of your identity documents for the Common Experience Payment application:

Chief or Councillor of First Nations Band Council
Council members of the Métis Settlements General Council, and members of the Saskatchewan Provincial Métis Council
Dentist
Executive Officer of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.
Executive Officer of Inuvialuit Regional Corporation and of the six (6) Inuvialuit Community Corporations (Northwest Territories)
Executive Officer Makivik (northern Quebec)
Judge
Lawyer (member of a provincial bar association)
Notary in Quebec
Magistrate
Mayor
Medical doctor
Minister of religion authorized under provincial law to perform marriages
Notary public
Optometrist
Pharmacist
Police officer (municipal, provincial, or RCMP)
Postmaster
Principal of a primary or secondary school
Professional accountant (APA, CA, CGA, CMA, PA, RPA)
Professional engineer (P.Eng., Eng. in Quebec)
Senior administrator in a community college (includes CEGEPs)
Senior administrator or teacher in a university
Social worker with MSW (Masters in Social Work)
Veterinarian

On the copy of the identity document that does not feature a photo, the person certifying the document must include the following statement: "I certify this to be a true copy of the original."

On the copy of the identity document that features a photo, the person certifying the document must include the following statement: "I certify that this is a true copy of the original, and that the image is a true likeness of the applicant. I am a Canadian citizen and have known the applicant personally for at least two years."

The printed name, position, signature, and contact information of the person certifying your documents must appear on all copies, along with the date the documents were certified.

Hope that helps!

Hi,
I need to provide certified copies of my daughter's birth certificate, my passport, my driving license and my birth certificate in order to apply for her proof of citizenship. I've taken this information from the Canadian Immigration website:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/CIT0001E4.asp

If this application is for your first citizenship certificate then provide clear and legible certified copies of your documents

To have a copy certified, an authorized person must compare the original document to the photocopy and must print the following on the photocopy:

•“I certify that this is a true copy of the original document”;
•the name of the original document;
•the date of the certification;
•his or her name;
•his or her official position or title;

•his or her signature.

Who can certify copies?People authorized to certify copies include the following:

In Canada:

•a commissioner of oaths
•a notary public
•a justice of the peace
Outside Canada:

•a foreign service officer
•a judge
•a magistrate
•a notary public
•an officer of a court of justice
•a person authorized to administer oaths in the country in which the person is living

Where did you take your list from Boncuk?

oops I thought I put the link now I lost it lol I will try to find it again. It was on the services canada website. I think the best bet is to get it notarised from a notary public. It's fast and cheapest.
I hope that you get it faster than I did :) lol I'm not sure about travelling with a British passport for the kids etc being a visa exempt country. So you may not even need temporary passports for them. I think the best is to call the embassy consulate side ofcourse and ask them if they can travel with British passports when your hubby lands. I know for me unfortunately I have to do the passports for my kids as this country requires visas :)) I gotta do that soon though.. lol I'm such a procrastinator.. I think it takes 3 weeks or something.. anyways I digress... :)

I had to do something similar for my sister back home in Australia and get a copy of a document certified. Being in London, I couldn't just go to an Australian police station or something similar where they can certify it. So I went down to the Australian High Commission in London and they provided this service for a small fee.

So I wonder whether the Canadian High Commission in London offers a similar service?

Yes I think that is what I will do, althought the first notary I phoned was charging me over 180$ to do it!! That is England for you!:) I tried to phoned the ambassy yesterday and it took me about 10 minutes and 5 different menues to finally be able to...LEAVE A MESSAGE! And of course they have not phoned me back yet...Anyway I am pretty sure it will be ok without temporary passport, she has got British one and we have been to Canada with her before and there was no problem.

Thanks for all your help Boncuk!

Hi Emmy,

Thanks for the infos, I think your right I could go to the Embassy and have it done there. The only problem is that it is quite far from where we live but it might be my only option!
