Applying for Work/Study permit before/during application

Hey all, I'm from America and is in the process of working on my application (haven't submitted it yet). I have been given a visitor's record for a good amount of time and was wondering if I can 1) apply for an open work permit / a study permit before or during the application process? 2) How would I go on about doing it if it was before submitting my application 3) How would I go on about doing it if it was during the application?

Hello,
I am doing the same thing as well, through Ontario. So I am researching this also. I know, from the research I have done, that you need an acceptance letter, proof of funds ( even if it's to show that your spouse/partner is supporting you), etc. The CIC site was invaluable throughout this process. They have the guides and info as in spousal sponsorship. Also the study section of the forum is helpful. Maybe the 'experts' can add to this. Good luck to you.
