Hi,

Has anybody applied for the PGWP while their passport was in the process of being renewed? My passport is expiring early next year and I want to get it renewed before applying, but if I am to start the process now, there would be some delay in applying for the PGWP. Thank you!

You can apply for PGWP now but the validity date will be issue to the date of your current passport expires. Unless you want to renew your passport first then apply for PGWP, that's okay too but do note that you have 90 days to apply for PGWP after your program is completed.

What if I am to apply when the passport is being renewed? Say for instance, I send the passport for renewal now and then apply for the pgwp a few weeks later using the old passport info when the prerequisite documents (for the pgwp) are at hand, and update the application with the new passport info when I get it (passport renewal takes 6 -8 weeks in my case so it should fall within the Pgwp application processing time). Is it possible to do that?

Yes you can do that as well.

So in that case, will the permit be issued on the basis of the old or the new passport?
Depends if your new passport page will be added on your application on time. But its should be fine because if CIC does issue your PGWP based on your old passport, you can extend your PGWP once its nearing its validity date. Your PGWP should have a remark like "PGWP extension upon passport renewal" in order to be eligible for extension.

Hi PootK. I am in the same situation. May i ask what happened to your case?

My case:

My program will end on December 2021, and i am planning to apply for PGWP by then. The problem is my passport will expire on March 2022 (I currently have an appointment on December 16 to renew it and it will take 6-8 weeks for the new passport to arrive). So let's say i apply for PGWP on December 2021 and will probably given a March 2022 expiry as well since the permit will expire with the passport. With the current processing period of PGWP at 97 days, i am not sure if i will even get my PGWP on time before my passport expires. What do you think i should do?

To summarize, here is the timeline:

Program ends - December 2021
PGWP application (97 days processing) - December 2021
Receive PGWP - approximately March 2022
Passport expiry - March 2022
Will get new passport - around February 2022

Hey Sheldon0516, I have the same issue. Trying to renew my passport, but the application got rejected once and I have graduated already. What did you end up doing? Please let me know.
Thank you!
