Applying for citizenship from abroad - please help (urgent)

Dear friends,

Under the new C6 rule that took effect on October 11, I qualify for Canadian citizenship with >40 days to spare (I already signed the application on Oct. 11). The issue here is that I moved to Boston, MA for an academic position in September.

I have decided to apply for citizenship now, cause it is the best choice I got (nothing to loose as I see it), and I need to maximize my chances. As such, I have been very accurate in stating my absences and have evidence to back them up. The only issue is the day trips I made to Detroit, but I will obtain my entry records from the US, they should have that since they scanned my US passport every time I went there.

The CIC website clearly (to me at least) states that you can apply and then leave the country: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=911&top=5

My issue goes beyond that, I need to apply from abroad and the big question is whether I need to drive to Montreal and mail my application or mail it from Boston? Is there any requirement to mail the application from within Canada ? If so do you know where I can read about this?

Please advise... your response is greatly appreciated as I need to decide in the next couple of days.

Applications had always been expected to be mailed within Canada, regardless of what citizenship laws was in place. It has been this way prior to C-24 law, under C-24 law and current C-6 law.

okay, so just to clarify my question further, I do have an address in Canada where they can correspond with me (I used that as my mailing address, and I used my Boston address for my residential address). So I am not asking them to correspond with me using a foreign address, but I just want to mail my application from Boston.

I know if is not your everyday situation, but would it be okay?

I tried to look for you online but I did not find clear reference indicating that you have to apply from inside Canada. I told you before it must be mailed from inside Canada but I do not find the reference.

emm, that's a tough one..

In 2012, I have renewed my PR card using photos I obtained from the CVS (in Boston), but I sent the application from Montreal and I requested expedited processing. CIC then sent me a notification indicating that my photos were not valid because they were too dark (which they absolutely weren't) and requested that I send them another set. They later (within a week) sent me the new PR card. Note that I was requesting expedited processing then.

Nowadays, I think things are more difficult, and they state the photos need to be dated and stamped by teh photo shop that produced them.

If I were you, AND I HAD NO OTHER choice, I'd probably make sure they are dated and stamped by the shop (from overseas), but make sure it's a reputable one, and send the application. You have 90 days for making sure your application is complete and delivered from the date you sign it, so why not try?
