Applying for Citizenship- currently PR Card only has my last name and no first name

Hi, I am Canadian PR going to apply for citizenship shortly, and wanted to check if anyone has had a similar situation. Basically- my complete name is noted as Given Name in my Indian passport (current) with no Surname. Accordingly, all my Canadian documents like PR card and Driver's license have my given name as last name, practically no first name.

I am filling out the Canadian citizenship application exactly as how my passport carries. Technically I do not have a first name in Canada- could this create an issue with my citizenship application?
I'd really appreciate if anyone can share their experience or thoughts..
Thanks

I am in kind of in same situation as yours, but my case is reversed where I don't really have a last name and my entire first name + last name is my first name because of the name given in my Indian passport. I would recommend filling out the form exactly as your last immigration document(passport) because if you don't they might return your application asking you to submit documents of your apparent name change. Basically if you write something that is different from your passport, then they might think that your name has changed in between and they will ask for proof. This happened to when I gave my PR card for renewal. I accidentally put my first name and last name the way it is supposed to be. I got a letter from IRCC asking for Name Change documents.

How did you deal with the situation when they sent you the query regarding apparent change of name?

I wrote a letter to them saying that was a mistake on my part and I haven't changed my name at all in the first place and requested them to renew my PR card with whatever my current name is. The new PR card with same name came in a few weeks after that.

If you wish to consider changing your name legally, have a look at this. But I think it's better to change your name legally after you become a Canadian citizen. Otherwise your Indian passport would have one name and your Canadian documents would have another. This will make your entry into countries like USA harder because now they have 1 person in front of them with 2 different names. That might also raise some flags at the border.

Hi Annikvir,

I'll soon be applying for citizenship and my scenario is exactly same as yours. Can you please confirm if you did apply for citizenship with mismatched names on passport/PR card? Did this create any problem?

1. No, read the instructions. If you have only one name, it goes in the surname field and the given name is left blank.

Hi, I have exactly the same situation.

My Indian passport had my complete name as given name and no surname. Accordingly in the Canadian Immigration documents I had put complete name as the last name and no surname.

Can you please let me know how did you end up entering you name in the application?

Did you guts fill the question #5 to provide your name as per passport, like put the full name as Firstname and Lastname as blank? Or no need to fill the details in Question # 5 - Have you ever used any other name ?

Do you really need to ask the same question in six different threads?
