Hi,

I am currently living in the UK and am a British citizen and hold a valid British passport.

I am hoping to move to Toronto to live with my girlfriend who is a Canadian citizen (we've been doing a long-distance relationship for 18 months now!).

I am currently looking for jobs in Toronto but want to go over as early as possible (looking at going just after xmas day). I don't think that I'll be able to find employment and get my visa processed in time for this departure date. Am I able to travel to Canada and enter the country on a one-way ticket as I am from a visa-exempt country, or do I need to show proof of exit? Will an onwards ticket to the US act as proof of exit?

Also, will entering the country on what would effectively be a tourist visa affect my chances of getting my work permit processed?

I have searched around these forums for a while now but seem to be getting more and more confused!

Any advice will be very much welcomed!

Thanks.

if you are under 30yrs of age try working holiday program from uk which would allow you to work and travel for 2yrs(processing time is about 3-4weeks approx). that way you donot need to show return ticket. but a return ticket should be kept handy for a visitor visa so that you could prove your intent to the immigration officer at the airport. Personally, I donot think they ask about return ticket from a british passport holder, BUT atleast you keep your story short and sweet : purpose=tourism. If you try to tell your romantic long distance fairy tale, it might just push buttons on the officer lol, so donot even remotely go there.

Also, will entering the country on what would effectively be a tourist visa affect my chances of getting my work permit processed?
cannot answer to that because some information is missing... did you apply for work permit?
