Just curious,

I am a Canadian citizen living in Bangkok and am married to a Thai. We applied for her PR in January from here in Bangkok. Have been approved as her sponsor but awaiting her PR card. Frustrating wait as we want to get going. Wondering if there's a way to wait it out inside Canada, specifically in N.B Recently my wife has been doing some reading about various Thai women in the same situation as ours. She found out that once the husband was approved as the sponsor, that the principal applicant could then go to Canada on a tourist visa and await the answer on the status of the PR. Do you know if this is possible? If so, would she be able to drive a car if she has an international driver's licence? Also, if an interview were necessary for her with regards to PR, would she need to leave the country or could it be done via skype or a representative in Saint John or N.B? Would she need to leave Canada to pick up the PR card or could it be mailed? Also a bit unclear about health insurance. She read that some women were able to obtain medicare with just proof of sponsorship approval, though I know we would need to buy private insurance for at least the first 3 months. If anyone you can help me with some of these answers I would be very grateful.

hey Starks1994,

I am not sure I can answer all questions but I can try with some!

To go to Canada - you are allowed to go to canada. If your wife is from an visa-exempt country, then it's no problem, but at the border you will need to prove that she is going back to Bangkok probably. Otherwise she would have to apply for a visa, and provide very good proofs that she intends to go back to Thailand once her visa is expired. A lot of visas are denied because the canadian government is afraid that your wife might not leave at the end of the visitor visa as she is married to a Canadian.

I have no idea about the international driver licence, I am trying to find out for myself ( moving to Canada on a visitor visa in October to wait out the PR), so if I find something I'll let you know!

If an interview is necessary she will have to go back to Bangkok.

To pick up her PR from the embassy, it depends on the VO - some only ask for the passport via mail, other only issue a letter (depending if you are from a visa exempt or not). best would be to check in the "thailand thread" where people can tell you more about this.

Once the PR is issued, she needs to either leave the country (if you leave close to the US border for example), or "land" ( complete the landing procedures as PR) in the nearest international airport that has immigration facilities (most major canadian airports do). When she "lands" ( completes the immigration procedure), she will indicate at which address in Canada she wants to receive her PR card.

health Insurance - it depends on the provincial system.

Good luck!
