Apartment renting for newcomers

Hi! I currently am renting and the person who owns the house put it on the market Wednesday... had someone look at it yesterday, and sold it last night. Needless to say, I'm panicking pretty badly right now. I still have between 30 days up to 3 months to find a new place and get out, but I'm having a problem FINDING the new place. I've tried Craigslist, and there seems to be quite a few bogus ads on there. I have recieved shady responses to several ads ("we're currently overseas but..." or "please send your credit report first k thanks bye") and I'm rather worried. How do I find a house to rent? Should I just drive around looking for "for rent" signs in windows? Are there any websites for home owners, or landlords to advertise houses for rent? I'm not looking for an apartment in an apartment building- that's my absolute last resort. I've found alot of apartment building rental sites, but nothing more. Please help! I'm getting frantic.
Partially depends on where you are located in Canada and what city (rural or urban centre also makes a difference). Your budget also makes a difference. More higher end rentals are listed with real estate agents.
Have you tried checking out websites that specifically list homes for rent by landlords or property owners? That might be a more reliable option. Also, driving around to look for "for rent" signs could be worth a shot! If you're open to exploring options beyond apartment buildings, you might find some listings for houses or other types of rentals. Best of luck with your search! The scams are all over the places so you have to be careful about that.
Booking AirBNB for few months is good idea that way you can build your credit score and visit apartments physically.
In my experience check Facebook marketplace and efforttrust website for apartment renting. There are less chances of scam in these.

If you use a Realtor they should be able to help you find a rental. In the past, I've helped several newcomer clients and we present the file to the landlord in a way that helps them establish trust and limit liability. There are many ways to do this. But keep in mind, even when working with a Realtor/real estate agent, there are many landlords that will reject applications just on the basis that the tenants are newcomers. This is a sad reality of the landlord landscape today, but you can still find a rental with a thorough search and working with the right agent.
I would be wary of doing private rentals from abroad (especially via Kijiji or Facebook marketplace) as this can lead to many complications. If you want to do a rental from abroad, I've done video call showings or invited the person's family/friend who is local to come see the properties with me.
Be diligent and never send funds via e-transfer/other means as there are many scams out there.

I just got my visa approved and am planning on moving to Peterborough soon for work purpose. I will join Trent University as a salaried employee (postdoctoral fellow) starting September 1.
I am looking for a small bachelor apartment (1bhk/studio unit) with a budget of around 1100 CAD.
Or
An apartment/house shared with another female (working professional will be great, non-smoker, non-drinker) with per head rent within 900 CAD.
Preferably furnished and close to Trent University bus routes.
It would be really helpful if I could get some options or ideas here.

What you will need to provide will depend on landlord and whether an individual or company. Most ask for first and last months rent.
