There are few factors -

>Your car should not be on loan.
>Talk to your insurance and tell them that you are going to Canada as Job transfer and for 6 months.. they will porivde you insurance here as well for 6months and by then you will create you driving history in Canada ( you might have seen above post that Insurnace is costly here in canada) - My fren did this 2yrs back and after 1 yr he got insurance from canada company which is $145 per month
> after 6 month you can registered your car here in canada
> I sold my car in USA which was a mistake ( i believe ) but I had other reason, since I was coming from west coast and my relocation limit from my company was not allowing me to transport the car... but I should have done some more detailed math.. anyways

Good luck, happy living in canada
pv - thank you for the advise, +1 for you.
Would appreciate if you can elaborate more on #4? Did you take into account all the taxes, shipping/long drive and other hussle of importing your car into account?

m2l -

Abt importing your car from USA to canada, you have to pay only $250 to Custom at the time of entry ( if you are driving)

My many frens who lives in NY upstate, IL and Michigan they drove to Canada so it was very easy for them.,

If you transport your car the rates are varied from pick-up location, for me it was coming $1450 + custom fees from Oregon to Toronto..

Driving was not an option for me from USA to Canada, as I had the desi car - Toyoto Corrolla 2002 and driving 2600 miles on that lil animal would me tough and torture :)

with ref to your last but one post

The insurance on new car comes very high, i ran a dummy quote on Hyundai Elantra $18700 and it was out of my reach ( i am not even able to get good quote on 2004 kia..:)

But as Qorax mentioned, we need to keep looking around we should find some good quote, but buying new car when you have just arrived and no insurance and driving history in canada, just don't think of it

yes. my car is on the loan.

well as you said. if my insurance company can provide insurance for that 6-12 months then that is good and also I can have canada driving history.

I will work out on this suggestion. thanks.

I don't think they will count my 3 years driving experience in USA while getting canadian car insurance. do they?

Thanks anyway

@@ me2land.. Thanks for your inputs.

They ask for driving record for insurance but not sure if really gives any value to it.. but anyhow you need driving record so that you can directly get G licence in canada else you have to wait and give some tests..

btn, if your car is on loan then you have to clear your loan... pl contact your finance company/bank about this, as i know you can not bring your car if its on loan

bye

Are you sure this is the only extra $$ we got to pay? I have read somewhere that there is some kind of tax (gst or provisional tax) that we have to pay at some point. It's something like 8% and this really is the deal killer. Can you or anyone confirm if there is such thing or it's just my illusions.

Hehehe , you crack me up. :)

m2l-
now there is nothing GST/PST, now only one Tax on everything which is HST (13%)
you don't have to pay till you registered your car here in canada

- pl note, when you are out in market for used car ( either from dealer or private party) you have to pay car price+13% hst (i hate this name, i am from Oregon where what you see is what you pay :), no sales tax at all, we finding difficult to adjust with 13% extra...)

Have a good weekend,
