..3 weeks in Vancouver and got a job in my line of business today ;D

Took me 3 applications and 2 interviews, so it is possible to get what you want and it is not a survival job..Thanks Vancouver, you are good to us!

Without going into any racial debate, yes, I am white and European. My field of expertise is international hotel management.

What did I do to get the job? Well, I had almost 3 years time to prepare (while waiting for PR) and make contact online to all sorts of hotels and HR people using linkedin.com and other channels. Having visited Vancouver several times and always made appointments with people, I was later able to drop some names to prospective employers. In my industry it is not what you know, it is who you know.

Since I am no Doctor, Nurse, Lawyer or Engineer or else, no one asked me about my degree or certifications, education plays only a small part, it is the years of experience you bring with you.

That is basically it, but as I said, it worked in my case. Others may find the job finding experience different.

I would not say easy, nothing is easy when it comes to finding a job. Be positive, prepared and at the right time at the right place.

Due to some personal reason I had to move back to my home country (India) about 1.5 years back. My PR application is in process, and planning to move back to Canada in another 3-4 months. Would like to know if you know of any reliable recruiters in Canada?

If I had a degree from Cornell, I would never come to Canada for any reason. You know what I'm saying...

Anyway, materials-mechanical isn't actually my field and I never worked with recruiters. So, can't be of much help. Have your LinkedIn profile ready and connect to different groups/recruiters there. Since you were in Kingston, you must know about Novelis (NGTC), acquitted by Birla Group. I worked there as a research student; you can try there.

Yes I have done some project work for Novelis at Kingston on their fusion alloy. It's too bad Novelis Kingston is moved to Atlanta, USA. I just started my job hunt in Canada, but not getting any response to my application. It is very difficult to look for Canadian jobs while sitting in India

i'm a telecom engineer (BSc and MSc from a university in an EU country)....i have more than 8 years experience in total (worked...in different areas - System support and Integration, Service Delivery management & Project Management) with a global telecom company....i'm still working up to date - but in my country, not in canada.

I landed earlier this year and stayed for about 2 and a half months (got a vacation from my employer)...during that period i attended a few job fairs, got contacts of some recruiters, connected with some immigrants who are already employed in my field, met a career consultant, did about 2 - 3 online applications a day....but the outcome was not promising. Although i did not expect to get a full time job
in my field in such a short period...but i expected to see some action "happening"...at least to be called for interviews...or even better to
be kicked out after the second round of interviews .

To date i got a few responses to my applications via linkedin and email - but they soon disappeared after they learnt that my work experience was not in Canada

I'm now preparing for my second landing (permanent move this time)...and i know its going to be really tough.

I was in toronto and have not been to any other city or province, at least in the telecom. field toronto seems to be the city with most job opportunities, but competition is tough as well. I always perceived alberta to be suitable for people with oil industry background - but
it may be just my perception, give it a try it might turn out to be better than toronto - its also an advantage that you have friends there.

I came to know about the job fairs through different channels (i.e. this forum, google, the free job listing newspapers that are available in canada)
