All about CAIPS notes

When I was trying to find information on getting my CAIPS notes, I found the information in pieces all over the forum, so I thought it might be nice to put it all in one place. CAIPS notes are the notes made on your file by the Immigration Officer...useful bits of information if you are called for an interview, for example. They take 4-6 weeks to arrive (the norm is about 35 days). They have to be ordered by someone in Canada, so you can either sign a form to have someone order them on your behalf (with a fee of $5, cheque payable to the Receiver General of Canada) or order them yourself for free if you are within Canada. Order the CAIPS notes, not the FILE, as the file contains everything, takes a LONG time to get, and can really slow down your application. CAIPS is just the basic information that you need, and does not affect your processing time in any way.

Hello,

I am brand new to this forum. I just found it yesterday. I am scared and frustrated as I continue to wait to receive acknowledgement of receipt of my spousal application that was mailed June 25, 2010 to Vegreville.

How long does it usually take to receive either CIC on-line acknowledgement or paper copy acknowledgement of receipt of your file?

Mine took 2 months, give or take a few days. That was 6 months ago though. Maybe it's faster now ...

For inland applications you don't receive a paper AOR, just check online using the receipt number or something what it says for your status.

Requester must be either Canadian, Permanent Resident, or currently present in Canada. So if you are not in Canada, then your sponsor will have to fill out the request form. Also, your sponsor will need to send a consent form or a letter. This could be either the "use of a representative" form that was filled out at the time of your initial application or you can click below and get the authority form.

If you don't have the reference number leave it blank. All you need in the form is the name on the application, the immigration file number, DOB, location of where the file is.

Fill out both forms attach a $5 check and send it to:

Ordering them doesnt speed up the process in any way.. it just gives you a peek in to what the notes say that the VO is making in your file... It can give you an idea of why things are taking a long time... or possibly what they think.

Thanks for the reply. It has already been over 3 months since my immigration attorney mailed my spouse application to Vegreville and the on-line information does not show that CIC has even received it (the previous decision they made is what still shows on-line -- I had erroneously applied under H&C and they denied it).

Should I order the CAIPS notes?

By the way, this website is great. Thanks for having it.
