If you want to work in Canada and don't mind getting your hands dirty?
Come to Edmonton with a very simple, concise CV, walk / drive around the big players in the oil & Gas industry and if you have a positive attitude and good command of English you'll be hired.
Getting your Class 3 or Class 1 drivers licence will help your case.
Getting your H2S and first aid certificates will also help.

Also keep in mind cost of living in Alberta is much higher and the weather is much more harsh and being in isolation for extended periods of time can also lead to depression and mental disorder

Alberta is a Prairie Province and yes it does have harsh weather. But coming from the UK I love it. 4 days of unbroken sun a weeks is awesome to grey gloom for 6 months. Temperatures have dropped to -30 already this year, but it was a cold snap lasting 3 days, -10 is common dropping to -20 sometimes. Horses for courses - do the research before coming out here. You just can't beat the buoyant economy at the moment. ***But*** it is fickle - this winter activity will be high but due to the low oil price that may affect activity & hiring early next year....

True!!! Most of what will be earned in Alberta will be spent on rent (unless one has property) and most of free time will be spent waiting for buses (unless one has vehicle).

Also I would like to add to that, most of the money will be spent on buying overpriced winter clothes cause its very cold. Most of your energy will be spend on fighting the cold.
So there you have it, you can waste your Time, Money and Energy fighting a loosing battle

Being living in Alberta for the last 8 years.

I bought a 150 dollar jacket, some ear plugs for 20 and some gloves for 10.... ahhh and a scarf for 15.... never bought anything else.... more than enough for -30

It might be cold for some, but I find it enjoyable and love Winter. Prefer it to BC's rain or to QB's snow....

Alberta rocks.

Not wasted anything at all.

Yeah, I agree... rent is expensive. Buying should be done ASAP. Transit is heaven. Can't understand why people complain. Buses are always on schedule, trains are fast and reliable, lots of routs. No need ot buy a car, IMO a waste of money.

I wanted to share my experience re: power field jobs. This is not meant for newcomers; rather for movers.

ONTARIO vs ALBERTA

I recently had a Skype interview (based on my 4 year experience in power) with a small private company based in Alberta who got big budget project of power substation design and automation. I was promised $20k/year + lot of OT on top of my current salary.

The workload is 3 times what I do now. Besides, I will leave an Ontario public service (high job security+better pension+benefits) for a small scale company (faster growth+less job security+high workload) which may not exist in 3 years. + the harsher winter.

I wanted to know what's out there; wasn't exactly looking to switch jobs.

20k per year is not much .. is it.. what that translates to in term of your take away per month.. after the tax.

20K per year? What? I think you missed a zero there. Alberta's job security is one of the best for experienced professionals. Moving or not, is your choice. But money is awesome, gas is cheaper, taxes are cheaper, and winter season is not really that harsh unless you work out in the field.

Get experience with small players, and move onto the operators. What a heaven you will be in while living lavishly. But yeah if you want to be stuck in a government job, you won't like working hard in Alberta.

O YES! 'Hindi' is almost like the 3rd lingo at home especially when your mom & wife watch the Star Plus/Sony soaps often. 8)

It was only $20K. Well, I only have 4.5 years experience after my graduation. I was hoping for at least $40k increase.

Get experience with small players, and move onto the operators. What a heaven you will be in while living lavishly. But yeah if you want to be stuck in a government job, you won't like working hard in Alberta.
I already got my initial experience with one of Canada's largest power company. If I want to move to a smaller one; I won't be looking for similar work; rather more high level responsibilities. And I don't want to stick to one company forever especially when there is slow growth. But when you're married and a baby incoming; it makes you think twice.

For that specific project; we have 3 different teams here. So, I will have x3 workload with only $20k upgrade. That wasn't attractive at all. My wife's a doctor (IMG). So, I will always keep an open eye for opportunities in Alberta.
