I can't seem to figure out what we need to do to get proper health coverage for my Austrian husband, if anything. He's been in Canada since May 2015. We applied inland and are still waiting for his open work permit to arrive. He bought health insurance in Austria before he came but it runs out soon.

I don't have a private plan through work, so I'm hoping someone here can help me out! Is my husband eligible for Alberta Health Care? Will he be eligible once the open work permit arrives? How do we get him a health card number?

Once he gets his work permit, he can bring it to a registry with his passport and some ID to get Alberta Health.

I got AB Health with only a one year work permit. It will have an expiration date but once he gets his PR then he should bring it in to get the expiration taken off.

Take the work permit, passport, sin number etc to a registry. You fill in forms and that's it. I received mine, it's valid until my OWP ends.
He can also get an Alberta drivers license/learners if he doesn't drive as his OWP allows him to be here 90+ days. I didn't have a uk license but say my learners test here and received my learners license last week. :-)

Hi there
If I can help I got my Alberta Healthcare with just my visitor visa and marriage certificate ☺☺

Go to the registry office with your husband and add him to your Alberta health care account. Just have something proving you are married. They will issue him a health card. He doesn't need his permit or PR status. In Alberta even a visitor spouse or dependant of an Alberta resident can be covered.

I got Alberta health yesterday as a visitor with proof of application of PR and marriage certificate. The registry tried to say we didn't qualify but we called Alberta Health and they were super helpful.

Glad you got it sorted!!

We were able to get Alberta Health using our marriage certificate and the passport stamp showing my wife arrived in Canada legally as a visitor. Alberta seems to be one of the easier provinces in that regard.

Awesome, thanks everyone! If I had known it was so easy we would have done that a while ago! Off to the registry office I go :)

Alberta is so much better than Ontario when it comes to this. In Ontario you even have to wait 3 months once you are PR! Even as a Canadian citizen you have to wait if you are out of the country for a longer period.

Hi Guys,

Is this applicable until today?

We went to registry and called Alberta Health care. They were telling that we must pass the PR application before I will be covered.

Do you have a valid permit? If so, you are eligible for AHCIP.

Hi that's great news! But there is no stamp on my passport that shows that I've landed in Canada, is there something else I can do? I did not need a visa permit to enter Canada.
