Hello,

I am a former resident of Ontario after which we moved out of the country. I will be going back this year with my family to Calgary. I am also expecting and due to deliver this year. How long will it take for my health card to be renewed in Calgary and what if I have to go for medical checkups meanwhile. Will they have to be privately paid? Me and my family are all Canadians. I plan to stay in Calgary for 5 months.

If you plannon staying in Calgary for 5 months you will be asked to repay your health care costs. Yes you are entitled to get access to health care right away if you plan on settling in Alberta. You have to stay at least 6 months but there is also wording about needing to show intention to settle in Alberta. They are not stupid and know Alberta is one of the provinces that provide healthcare upon landing. Are you planning on leaving Canada after having your child?

Yes I will leave Canada at the end of 5 months. I'm only going there to visit family which I often do. I just wanted to know what rights I have as a Canadian. Will my medical costs be covered or not.

They will be covered but then they will likely seek payment from you for not meeting the requirements to be eligible for health coverage. Makes sense. If you are not paying taxes and are a visitor, even if you are Canadian, why should your healthcare be covered. If you have healthcare coverage whereever you are living I would stay and have your baby there.

Do not seek health coverage in Alberta. Either pay the full costs yourself or reschedule your trip to give birth in your current country. If you do take AHCIP and then leave after 5 months, you will knowingly be committing health care fraud.

Since you have lived in Canada previously, you may not be eligible for immediate health care coverage. The immediate coverage only applies to returning Alberta residents and newcomers in most cases. Otherwise there is still a 3 month waiting period. You must also commit to residing in Alberta for 12 months or more (beyond the 184 day requirement). If you are simply visiting for an extended period, it’s unlikely you will qualify for any coverage.

When you move to Alberta from another province or country, there may be a waiting period before you become eligible for coverage under the AHCIP.
