Hi everyone,

I am looking for some advise here.

I became a PR 2 years ago. Last year I married my foreign girlfriend and we registered in Alberta, during her 2-month visit to Calgary starting from December. She is pregnant now and planning to come to Canada in the next few months. We hope to have the baby born here.

My question is can she apply for Alberta Health Care in her next visit? If not, what are the approximate costs including routine checks and giving birth in Alberta. What else options do we have if we want to have our baby here?

In addition, we are currently working on her family sponsorship PR application.

Thanks for your help.

I have heard of foreign spouses being covered under AB health in certain circumstances. Definitely after you have applied and gotten first stage approval on your application but that doesn't happen instantly. Before getting first stage approval, I have also heard of some. One said the key to it was getting a visitor record on entry stating that she is allowed to stay in Canada for a year, hence AB health could say since she makes her home in AB more than 6 months a year, she is eligible. You should discuss this with AB health and find out what you need.

If you get AB health, you shouldn't have any costs. If you don't, you will have to pay for the birth and that can easily go up to $5000 even if there are no complications and with complications will be even more.
