Which one would be a better Option for higher Studies ( MBA or Masters in IT related Stream )

AUSTRALIA

Advantages

1> Part Times job readily available right from the First Day
2> Good Climate
3> Wages are better as comapred to Canada

Disadvantages

1> Getting PR might be a Big Hurdle as I have to give IELTS and secure 8 in each Module while applying for Immigration. Correct me If I am Wrong.

2> After 2 years , I will get 2 years of Work permit ( CN - it is 3 years ) and while applying for Post Study Work permit, after completion of my studies, I have to give IELTS again to change from Student Visa --> Work Visa ( which i think is not required in Canada to give IELTS that time )

3> The position which I will be working at, after completing my studies , should be in SOL ( Immigration List ) which is usually changed after 6 Month so here it is like a Gamble.

4> Aus is definitely expensive but what I come to know is that at the time of Visa I have to show 1 year of Tuition fees and 1 year of living Cost and that 1 year Of living Cost, I can utilize for my 2nd year of Tuition fees and Actual living Cost could be incurred by doing Part Time Jobs , right after first day ( But again I am Not Sure as it seems Risky ). kindly Suggest !!!


As of now, my first Priority is MBA with GMAT from Canada , after my 2 years of Work Ex in IT Industry ( SAP-Testing Profile ) but in Aus No GMAT is required so my efforts will be saved if I go for MBA from Aus.

In Addition, I will start preparing from Mid November for GMAT and by 15 Jan I have to wrap up myself with GMAT ( Univ Deadlines Issue ). I am not sure being a full time working Professional, 2 Months of time is sufficient for preparing and give GMAT or not . Please suggest !!!!

In Canada, I am not considering Masters in Comp Science or S.W Engg because neither I am having related Education in my Academics ( B.Tech was in Electronics ) nor I am having Work Profile of Programming Skills ( Current Role is SAP Functional Consultant - Not Interested in Research or Coding Area )

In Australia, Either I can apply for MBA or I can go for direct SAP related programs like 'Master of Business Information Management and systems' which is matching with my Profile.

Kindly Do reply properly and exactly to all the enlisted queries and Suggest the Best Option for me as per you Guys.

Before weighing your pros and cons. I suggest you take your IELTS exam first. Australia requires a higher band score compared to Canada. Then you decide basing on your band score.

Okay, let me try to answer your queries.

Australia or Canada, there is no correct answer to this question. Infact I have been contemplating about this for a while and still unsure as to what I will do. At present I have made up my mind that I will apply to school in both the countries and then take a decision from there on.

Part time jobs availability is a minor issue as far as I think. One important factor that you have listed is lack of clear pathway to PR. But there are several others that you have missed. What are your career goals in the long term? Does Canada or Australia have a better industry in your field of choice? MBA schools from either Canada or Australia are quite lackluster on an international scale, so I won't be too much bother about it, but its still a factor. You should also consider that Australia is an island, where as once a Canadian PR you can tap into united states' job market which is huge.

Now to the part which compelled me to answer you. I have more than 5 years of experience, most of which is abroad doing projects in asia pacific, middle east and europe. I am also deciding if I want to do an MBA. But before you spend a big sum and two years of your life to study MBA you need to ask your self a few questions.

Are you sure you want to do an MBA? Have you selected your major in which you want to do an MBA? Would you want to be in consulting, marketing or strategic management ? or may be you want to be in finance, angel investment or investment banking? What kind of career path do you see for yourself.

Secondly in my opinion your experience is too less for an MBA career, I might be wrong here but generally speak MBA inductees in top tier schools are on any average have 40-50 months of experience. Thirdly, any school which conducts its MBA lessons in English and accepts admissions without GMAT is worthless in my eyes. MBA is a soft skill, its not like skills that you learnt during your electronics course (by the way I my self am an electronics grad). MBA is based on brand name, and the school where you do you MBA from is all that matters. Your school name, your brand, your alumnus, your connections, your industry links; all these which you have made during you MBA school time is what makes an MBA special. So doing an MBA in a no-name school with a bunch of kids is not going to be worth a lot in the long run.

So doing an MBA from a third tier school is useless as far as my opinion goes. If you want to do an MBA, bite the bullet, spend the money and do it from a top notch school. MBA is an investment that pays handsomely if done wisely. And is money down the drain if the decision is made wrongly. Ofcourse what ever I have said about MBA schools doesn't hold if YOU as a person is MBA material, you know how to build your own brand, you are very relaxed in networking and connecting with people, you know you are made for an MBA then a lower tier school will just be a weight pulling you down.

Add to it the fact that you still haven't taken your GMAT yet shows how unprepared you are. As a rule of a thumb an MBA aspirant should start preparing atleast 20 months before the classes he aims to attend. There are long lists of books that you should have read before you apply for an MBA. If you don't know going in what you want from an MBA, you are screwed. Big time.

Bottom line: Do an MBA from a top tier school, otherwise don't bother. (Top 5 from Canada, top 25 from US, top 4 from australia)

I have no inputs about if you should do masters in computer systems or SAP or whatever, its your decision to make. I can only tell you this; I see students on this forum day in, day out who want to just go abroad, they have no idea what they will face in that country. They aren't prepared for it. Even in this day and age when internet has provided all the information we need on your fingertips we still choose not to collect it. What ever you do, where ever you go, make an informed decision. Yes luck plays a big part but atleast you have done your due diligence. The rest is in the hands of {write here who ever you believe in}

Firstly, thanks to you giys for your Inputs.

Its not like I don't know anything and just want to go over there, complete my studies , expecting that I will get great jobs right away and holding n'waiving a PR but but at least there are some expectation you have with yourself. If I have made up my mind for these countries then of course before landing up there, I will dig in and explore all the +ve and -ve Consequences and choose the Course, university accordingly.

I have been doing research from quite a long time and now I am standing here with 2 Options of Aus and CN. I did not make queries for other countries and that proves that I am knowing the Nitty Gritty of those Countries ( at least at superficial level ) or may be those Countries are not satisfying my Requirement or I did not consider them because of many reasons ... Blah Blah !!

Now Comes the topic of Course Selection , Initially I thought to go for 1 year of PG Diploma but when I did some Core analysis, I found the truth that is not having much Scope ( May be I am wrong but The actual truth you will never know until you land there ), but every1 suggested me for Masters and I am petty much Eligible for it as I am fulfilling the Requirements as per my Profile :

Profile:

High School - 10th 87 %
Intermediate - 12th - 83%
B.Tech - 74 %
Work Experience in one of the Best MNC - 2.5 years ( as SAP( Enterprise Resource planning) Consultant /Test Analyst )

From this forum , I decided not to go for PG Diploma which could have save my couple of thousand Bucks but as it will be my Last Education, I want to make it Concrete with some weight-age like Master Degree.

I am not saying PG Diploma is bad , may be another Person with PGD is earning much that Univ pass out currently but When I can go for Degree Programs like Masters , then why PG Diploma.

I hope you are not referring to me specifically by saying that I am going just for PR and not concerned about my Career.

Now as far as PR is concerned , Who does not want PR . If I have shortlisted this country definitely somewhere in the back of my mind dream of having PR is there which is not at all wrong but along with this Other factors/Aspects I am considering too.

Now how will I get to know what are the challenges I am going to face until and unless I reach there in that Environment. I can only do my analysis here from internet or Listening to someone's experiences. That is why I asked for Part time Jobs and Job prospects.

I am very well aware of my strengths . You want me to send you Resume stating my Weakness, Strengths and Achievements etc etc ?? I hope the Answer is NO.

I am not only thinking twice but 100 times before leaving my Home Country and till now I have not considered to be KING of Canada.

I will struggle or not for jobs after my course completion, that is later thing and depends on me, Condition there , Luck and many other factors but Don't Judge that Indians don't find good Jobs.

Regarding MBA, I do agree with you and that is why I posted this Query whether this 2 Month time will be sufficient to crack GMAT with Good Scores ( Min 550 required ) or not

I have never planned to go for 3rd Class Univ which does not require GMAT or Work Ex.

What I know is all the Univ for MBA are almost at the same Level (Govt. Funded ) in Canada ( EXCEPT the top tier 5-7 Univ ) but again top notch Univ are expensive, I can not consider them because of my Budget Constraints.
and You are suggesting to go only in those 5-7 Top tier Univ

yes, I am totally Unprepared for GMAT at this point of time and that is why I require your Guidance whether I should go for medium/Average Tier ( not 3rd Tier ) with GMAT or not

I am in precarious situation because of the following reasons :

1> Not interested for Research based Masters. Only Course Based masters I can go for

2>Even though my work profile is in IT , I can not go for Masters in those IT related specialization in which Loads of programming in JAVA or C++ are there as my B.tech was in Electronics and I have never been into Coding Area ( Current Role is Functional Inclined not Technical )

3> Not interested in Master of Engg in Electrical and Comp ( Don't want to dive again into Electronics )


Now If I should not go for MBA as per your suggestion not even in these Medium Univ ( which Require Work Ex and GMAT ) and I can not go for Masters because of the Stated concerns above, then what is left with me
