okay, slightly complicated issue, but here goes.

My mother is a UK citizen.
When she was young, her parents(UK citizens) died.
She was then adopted by her sister and her (then) husband who is a Canadian citizen.
She immigrated with them to Canada for 15 years. She has a 'landing card'?! and i think she is still in possession of this.
Does this legally make my mothers adopted father, my grandfather?
Would this work in terms of family class sponsorship?
Would my mothers landing card and temporary citizenship hold any bearing on anything?

i also have family there, aunts, uncles, cousins ect, if this makes any difference?

thanks

It sounds like your Mother was a Permanent Resident. It's unclear if she is or became a Canadian citizen. Can you elaborate on "temporary citizenship"?

If your Mother was a Canadian citizen when you were born, then you may be a Canadian citizen already. You can check if you are a Canadian citizen by answering a few questions here

If your Mother never became a citizen, the question is whether she retained her PR - to do so she would have had to be in Canada for 2 years every rolling 5 years - so start by checking if she's been in Canada 730 days in the last 5 years. If so, if you are under 21, her dependent, and if she lives in Canada she could maybe sponsor you.

Yes she was a permanent resident but this was back in the 70's. She was there for about 15 years but left perminantly about 30 years ago.
She has only been back on holidays a few times since she left.
So my adopted grandfather has no weight on this?

Your mother could look into applying for citizenship if she wants to. You can find some forms here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/cit-adoption.asp However, if she was not a citizen when you were born, then you do not have a claim to citizenship.

Leon, the mother hasn't been in Canada for 30 years. Also you couldn't have got citizenship via adoption in those days. You got PR and then had to apply for citizenship after 5 years.
