My mom was born in Canada and moved to the USA as a child. I was born in the USA. On the CIT0001 form it asks "Did you leave Canada for 1 year or longer before 1977?" Since I was never in Canada, I don't know how to answer this question nor the dates to put. Should I say, "no", I did not leave Canada (because I wasn't ever there in the first place) or "yes", and put what dates? My birth date to the date of my application or my birth date to 1977?

This conundrum is also on the question regarding my mom and when she was absent from Canada for 1 year or longer since she left when she was a child and didn't return. I would answer "yes" but what dates would I put down? I have an approximate date for her coming to the USA but should I put the application date or 1977 as the end date?

Any advice on how to answer these two questions would be helpful. Thanks.

In general, if a question doesn't apply to you write "Not Applicable." But follow the specific instructions. For your mom, I would put the end date as 1977.

It's fine to just write "N/A. Did not live in Canada." For your mom, you could write 1977, though I'd be inclined to go with "present." Don't feel constrained by what you can type onto the form online. You can also write information with a pen after you print it out.

Thanks. I'll do the Not Applicable. Did not live in Canada. Sending this is. Cross your fingers.

Hello Linda, I'm filling out my application now and my situation is the same as you described. My father was born in Canada but I was born and live in the US. Did the answer "NA. Did not live in Canada." work for you? Thank you for your reply.
