About certified translations

Hello all, I hope you are doing great.

I sorely need help with this part of the application which is confusing.

I live in Japan, my marriage certificate is written in Japanese. There are translation companies and I also have a friend who could translate the document to English for me. The Canadian Embassy in Tokyo also provides the services of a notary public.

The case:

The Document Checklist states:

"You must provide certified translations in either English or French for all documents that are not already in English or French"​

Also, most of the documents they require are photocopies from original documents.

Now, in the Online Complete Guide (IMM 5289) Step 2: Gather your documents I found this: (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5289ETOC.asp#gather)

Translation of documents

You must send the following for any document that is not in English or French:

- the English or French translation
- an affidavit from the person who completed the translation (see below for details)
- a certified copy of the original document.

Outside of Canada: The affidavit must be sworn in the presence of a notary public.

Certified true copies

To have a photocopy of a document certified, an authorized person must (as described below) compare the original document to the photocopy and must print the following on the photocopy...

... Persons authorized to certify copies include the following: Outside Canada: a notary public​

Question:

Which one is the correct combination of documents to submit?

a) A copy of the original + a certified translation from a translation company (who will provide the translation + the translation certification) (this is what I understand from the document checklist alone)

b) A copy of the original, certified by a notary public + a translation from a friend of mine with an affidavit sworn in front of a notary public of the Canadian embassy. (I am hoping is this one because is cheaper)

c) A copy of the original, certified by a notary public + a certified translation from a translation company (who will provide the translation + the translation certification). (expensive option).

Option B), Any one can translate (other than family members or relatives and you dont have to tell them if it was done by a friend) as long as they provide an affidavit of accurate translation certifying that they have command over both languages. Notarize the Photocopy of the original document, its translation and the affidavit of accurate translation. The notary public doesnt have to be of the Canadian Embassy. Thats what we did in our case.
