To everybody who commented on my last thread about work permits and my status in Canada now.

I'm back at work now, and I owe it to several of you for helping me out, calming me down and giving me the confidence to call the CIC lady and confirm what you guys so wisely told me was true.

You all are the best ;D

Hey,

I just read your previous thread to see what you were referring to, and - I'm not sure you're legally allowed to work in Canada.
Inland application with an OWP goes give the right to keep on working, but only if you have a work permit that is extendable... and that's not the case for an IEC visa. it would work with a closed permit for example, but not with an IEC... I know that it's not what you want to hear, but I'm pretty sure I remember somebody in a similar situation, where the person was allowed to keep on working by the employer (on the assumption of inland/implied status etc) but then when CIC found out, the applicant was told that he had been working illegally all this time. I would really encourage you to double check with Service Canada to make sure that with an IEC visa it's actually allowed.
I don't mean to stress you, as I understand it's stressful enough as it is, but hopefully somebody can chime in and confirm - or not (for your sake, I really hope I'm wrong).

I explained to the CIC lady I spoke to which visa I was on and how it wasn't an open work permit!

Happy birthday! :)

And if you called CIC and the immigration lady told you that you are ok, then that is your excuse. The call centre agents are not always right but since they are the only people CIC lets you talk to, they can't really blame you for taking their advice, can they now?

Happy birthday! I didn't mean to spoil your day, and as Leon says - if CIC told you it's OK, then it's your excuse. I just didn't want you to end up in a bad situation. hope it all works out well for you.

Has anyone been able to use what a call centre agent supposedly told them as a successful defence when facing trouble? The onus is on the applicant to ensure they are in compliance. Better to have something in writing from this lady, otherwise it's your word against hers.
Some members have been given incorrect information and advice by those call centre agents. I would call again and this time, provide your email address and ask the agent to email the section of the Immigration Act that specifically deals with your question. If it exists, they should be able to send it to you. The email will have that agent's first name and last name initial.

I'm with Leon, I wouldn't call again. Even if they sent you the section of the Act, likely neither you nor I would intrepret it the same, NOR as CIC has written it to be intrepreted either.

I really think she is on implied status, the open work permit application was sent before her work permit expired. Even the CIC call center agent told her it was fine. I have co-workers who worked even after their sin are expired as long as they have an application pending. They never had any problems. Sometimes people giving advises in these forums can scare you so much you would just want to cancel your whole application.
