The dark days of Harper's rule are over! Now, we can just hope that CIC Minister Chris Alexander goes down to defeat!

Chris Alexander has lost his seat!

Thank goodness. Chris Alexander is a callous, fake man. He helped destroy lives and ruin families. Glad he has lost. Now I wonder what will the Libs do with hundreds of thousands of backlogged files? How fast will they fix the CIC mess?

Ha... Politicians all like to talk about thing and make promises, I won't be surprised if none of them come true

No surprise there are multiple threads about this. Wonderful news. Could not walk away from the television for hours and hours, even though the ultimate outcome was apparent from early in the evening, even before the polls here closed, for certain very soon after they did.

Overall I strongly feel this was a very, very good night for Canadians, even though the party which won is not the party I backed or voted for (although I gave a ride to the polls for someone I knew would vote Liberal, so I guess I was supporting that vote as well).

Not the party I backed or voted for, but an outcome to celebrate for many, many reasons.

The main thing is that Harperman is gone, gone, gone.

I applaud Tom Muclair for doing all the heavy lifting for four years, standing up in Question Period week after week despite its apparent futility, doing the work that needed to be done to help Canadians recognize what the Harper government was inflicting on this great country.

But a big, big round of applause for Justin Trudeau, who rose to the occasion, who stayed positive, who has consistently vowed to govern on behalf of all Canadians, something Harper appears to never have given a second thought.

And the biggest round of applause for Canadians. When their democracy was on the line, they came out in huge numbers to make a difference, to exercise their franchise, to vote for a government that would represent them.

On a night like tonight (even if it is already into the next morning), I am especially proud to be a Canadian. Feels good.

I am not sure how much a priority it will be to amend the Citizenship Act, to reverse some of the more noxious elements introduced by the SCCA (Bill C-24), but given that our Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized, in his speech tonight, that "a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian," that is a fairly salient signal it is one of the things the new government is likely to address.

Wow, it feels good to be one of those Canadians who is a Canadian who is a Canadian.

How soon will these new changes take effect? Will the new Lib gov't try to erase the backlog created by Jason Kenney?

No major changes soon.

Moreover, as for what CIC does, remember it is a bureaucracy. A bureaucracy is what a bureaucracy does. Bureaucracies evolve, slowly evolve. Moreover, it is unlikely that a Trudeau government will engage in heavy-handed top-down management, and that tends to slow change.

In other words, do not expect to see big changes this year, perhaps not even into the next year.

But over the course of the next four years, sure, there are going to be some rather significant changes. How those changes will affect individuals is hard to forecast.

Well put.
However I am more curious about Libs putting an end to the mess created by Jason Kenney.

I can only say that I am anxious to be a Canadian who is a Canadian who is a Canadian.

Congrats to the Liberal Government on winning their mandate.

The Conservatives simply lost on account of Stephen Harper alone. Be to be honest, had Stephen left 4 years ago and allowed someone to take over leadership, the conservatives may probably still win.

BTW: Trudeau won the election with 39.5%. That means 60.5% didn't vote for him. Does Trudeau have a right to majority government with 39.5% of votes? According to dpenabill's past posts, if Stephen Harper doesn't have the right to majority government with 37.6%, neither does Trudeau. But that's okay because it's Trudeau, Right?

That's the way democracy works. The people spoke and voted. Life goes on.

What backlog? The one the Liberals created?
The old PGP system whereby there was a 8 year or more backlog?
The old system where immigrants applying under the points system waited years on end to get PR only to land with no jobs in Canada?
The system was revised to REMOVE backlog, not create more.

I rather have a majority Liberal than a minority Liberal. Liberal will spend money according to NDP demands. Once minority government falls, Liberals will take credit for NDP demands and come back with majority. It happened to every Liberal Minority government. Take the Wynn Ontario Government as an example.

Liberals are the devil I know.
