I just needed peace of mind on this as I am not sure about the answer.

I got Citizenship before the new rules were enacted this year. Will I loose my Citizenship privileges if I stay outside of Canada for more than 6 months now?

My wife will apply for Citizenship next year under the new rule (assuming current rules are in effect). Will she loose her Citizenship after becoming a Citizen (provided she stayed in Canada after sending in the Application) if she stay outside of Canada for more than 6 months (of course staying with me)?

Basically, I am confused of this 6 months rule. Seems it has created 2 different category of Citizens.

Would appreciate if someone could clarify. Many thanks.

There is no six month rule. Once you are a citizen you can leave for as long as you want to.

LOL !! No. Neither of you are going to lose your citizenship.

Since you already got citizenship, this does not apply to you AT ALL.

To apply for citizenship, your wife :

1) Must have stayed in Canada for 4 out of the past 6 years.
2) Must have been physically present in Canada for 183 days (6 months) each year for the past 4 out of 6 years.
3) She should have filed income tax returns every year.
4) The 4 years should be counted AFTER she became a PR (Time spent before becoming a PR cannot be counted).

Once you become citizens, you are free to stay outside Canada for any number of years you want. You'll still be Canadian!!!

Good luck! Very soon, some aspects of the bill-C24 shall be modified to make this process easier. The previous government screwed it up for people applying citizenship in Canada. They put in meaningless and horrid restrictions for people who genuinely want to become Canadians. Hope the new government will clean the filth the previous "government" left behind.

I think you are relating to the new rule about Intent to live in Canada after becoming Citizen. According to new rules they could cancel your Citizenship if it is ever proven that you did not had intention to live in Canada when you became Citizen. It is to prevent people who just come here to get the passport and fly away.

This got nothing to do with staying outside 6 months or more. You are not prisoner here, you can go a live where ever you want and have nothing to worry.

The "intent to reside" provision was only supposed to pertain to the period the citizenship application was in process. Once a citizen, you can go anywhere you want for as long as you want. Regardless, the new liberal government is unlikely to enforce that and appear to want to scrap it altogether. Rightly so.

I suppose you support those who apply for citizenship on way to the airport only to return for test and oath, eh?

That is the purpose of the "intend to reside" during the citizenship application process.

I absolutely do. No one has the right to tell you where you should live including CIC, so yes please are under no obligation to live in Canada once they become citizens and that will never change. Do you know why a lot of people return home after obtaining their citizenships? because they cannot find jobs here in Canada.
This is such a ridiculous argument that people should stay once they become citizens, it does not make any sense. Give people jobs and they will stay here without a doubt.

Yes. Once they are Canadian, they can leave at any time. I rather inconvenient those who apply for citizenship on way to airport than those who wait and gotten their citizenship before leaving.

Nobody is stopping anyone from leaving Canada for jobs. Getting Canadian citizenship is not required for jobs outside Canada. So if one need to leave Canada for jobs, so be it. If you want to earn Canadian citizenship, at least stay in Canada until you get it. It is a small sacrifice one must be willing to put up for a lifetime gift of Canadian citizenship.

If it is such an inconvenience for them to stay in Canada for a lifetime gift of citizenship, obviously they are only interested in being Canadian of convenient, nothing more.
