6 months expiration

Hi,
I hope somebody can help me with this question. My friend who is a US Citizen will be 6 months here on March 10,2019. But he wants to extend his vacation. Do you think Canada will allow him to extend for extension of 1 year? He has pension & savings to finance his stay .He just want to explore Canada.
Another, if he go to US for a week, for instance Feb.2019. Does his stay in Canada be reset or back to zero or he still need to apply for extension?

There is no guarantee he will get 6 months when he enters the first time. If he does get approved I would apply online for an extension. His chances of not being let back into Canada after a 6 month visit would be higher at the US border,
