21 year old moving to Canada without a spouse?

Hi guys

I currently live in Scotland and I have wanted to move to Canada for a long time. I have recently graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Business Management and I speak fluent French.

I have looked at applying for permanent visas recently for the future and I am confused about the adaptability section points system. I understand that points can be earned from your spouse if they have certain education and language levels. I am 21 years old and single, therefore I have no spouse. I do not have arranged employment or family living in Canada so I would not receive any points for this section from what I can see - which would effectively stop me from being eligible.

Are there differences in points requirements for those applying with no spouse? I find it strange that someone can earn 10 points from having a spouse with education and language requirements but that those without a spouse lose points in this area - who could still be strong applicants.

Does a spouse also need to be a wife/husband. I plan to move with my brother who will have the exact same points scoring as me in two years after he finishes education. If we were to apply to move together could he be classified as a spouse as we would be living and moving together? I understand this is unlikely but could points be earned from moving with a family member in this way?

Thanks. :)

Yes - the spouse certainly needs to be a husband or wife. No - of course it can't be your brother. If you and your brother both wish to immigrate, you'll have to qualify and apply separately. You cannot immigrate together through one application. No - you won't get any points for your brother.

I would recommend you join the Express Entry section of this forum for the rest of your questions.

I love your optimism, you know it is not possible but still you are trying to figure out your ways to Canada :D. Anyways you have the passion to move and I bet you will be in Canada one day. Good luck.

There are many different streams to apply to PR and there are different requirements for all of them. With the streams under EE you have meet the requirements and then only the strongest of those who meet the requirements will actually get to apply for PR. So even if you meet the requirement you still many not get the chance to apply. And I am not even sure what stream you would meet the requirements to apply under.

You are young so you have time to get what you need to up your points and to meet requirements of different streams.

I would suggest looking into an IEC visa. This is basically a working holiday visa. Depending on where you are from it could allow you to work one or two years in Canada. There are a limited amount of them and they are usually only released early in the year. They are usually gone within 20 minutes of being released. I am not sure if they have all been released yet for this year. So look into it now.

By getting the one year work visa you will get a chance to come to Canada to make sure it really is some place you want to live as well as giving you more options to different ways to apply for PR.

Thanks for the replies guys (even the ones laughing at me for asking a dumb question about my brother being a spouse lol). I just didn't understand how people with a spouse can get 10 points to their application for adaptability for pretty basic things. Oh well :)

I think at the moment I will have to hold out for now and gain more points from work experience. It may take me many years but it has always been my dream to move to Canada. I just hope I don't earn work experience then the government change that job to a level C or D :'( or up the points required

If I applied for EE and met the requirements but didn't get invited to apply for PR would I still be able to apply under a different stream or would I be unsuccessful? And how many times can someone apply for PR.

Ps I'm from the UK if this changes anything. Thanks for the help guys :D

what stream are you thinking of applying under now? The EE has about 4 streams under it the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and
the Canadian Experience Class and a portion of the Provincial Nominee Program.

I believe you can apply as many times as you want but it can get expensive so you want to make sure your chances are good. If you get an invitation from the EE then you should be approved for PR. The thing is that only people with top marks will get the ITA.

This is why I encourage you to look at coming on a work permit to gain Canadian Work experience then you could apply under the Canadian Experience Class or look into getting a nomination from the province you work in. To be eligible for CEC you must have one year work experience in Canada. Some of the Provincial Nominee programs need you to have as little as 6 months work experience in that province.

My BF is from England and came here on a IEC work permit (one year holiday work visa). He got a job after about 5 months of being here. He applied for a second IEC WP (you are allowed two in your life time) after he got that he applied to the Provincial Nominee Program. The first WP gave him what he needed to apply (6 months of full time work) the second gave him time to do the PNP application and get approved. Now he has sent in his application to CIC as a Provincial Nominee. With his PNP certificate he can apply for a WP that should allow him to work until he gets PR.

So look into the IEC work permit and then before you come look into different Provincial Nominee Programs to see what province you would most likely get a nomination from. I believe you can still do this while waiting to see if you get an ITA from the Express Entry System. But if you get the ITA right away then you wouldn't have to bother with the other stuff as you should have PR within 6 months.
