Bank services:need advise on choosing a good bank

I use Bank of Montreal - mostly because of the Air Miles. ;D When you land, you should receive a magazine with articles and ads. There should be an ad or two in there from banks with special offers just for Immigrants.

Ontario Drivers license and 1 eye

LOL @ people of certain cultures. I am not surprised that newcomers can see how the driving really is in the city, but there are worse places to drive. :D So, have you tried to walk on the sidewalk with only one-eye open? :P Let me know how far you get without bumping into anyone. :P

Ontario Drivers license and 1 eye

True...it doesn't mean one cannot drive at all. But one must be EXTRA careful. Have you tried walking with one eye closed? :P It makes me wonder about the drivers in Toronto... many one-eyed drivers?

decision to accompany or not accompany family

Of course! :D The less time you spend outside the country, the more quickly you get to 1095 days in Canada. Duh! That's why we've been travelling within Canada the past 2 years - one more year to go and my wife can then apply for Citizenship. Can't wait! I miss my yearly trips to EU.

Ontario Drivers license and 1 eye

They driver licensing office will make you pass a vision test as you look through a viewfinder using "both" eyes. As far as I know, they do not test the left eye and right eye separately - they test both eyes together. I don't think you will need to worry about passing the vision test. However...

name change -- upon arrival in canada. help please

The PR card name change was done through postal mail. The Health Card and SIN cards were done in person. I suppose what you were told at the embassy would work - it's worth a shot to try when you land. If that fails - then you've got a fall back option.

Drivers Education & Licences in Canada

I can tell you for a fact that the written test only needs to be written once (so long as you pass, of course). ;D

name change -- upon arrival in canada. help please

PMM is right - the name on the PR card will be the same as on the passport. My wife went through the same thing - we changed her last name a couple of months after she landed in Canada. It was a pain to get new PR card, new SIN, new Health card - but it all worked out nicely without any hiccups.

    Websites for buying cars

Once you have settled on a choice of year/make/model, it's a good idea to search on message boards and Consumers Reports to check out the reliability of used vehicles. Don't buy something that will consistently require repairs. :)

Can we open a joint bank account in Canada

Likely not, because they will need your signature and proof of indentification (no photo copies). You will most likely need to be at the bank in person as well.

In my opinion, these are some of the more popular ones within the GTA: CBC 99.1 CHUM FM 104.5 Z103.5 <- morning show is really good. :D Mix 99.9 There are probably others, and I'm sure you can listen to these online.

do I need to pay off my car before landing?

How many more payments are there? Couldn't you keep driving and making your payments without the bank even knowing that you now live in Canada? Once you have paid off the loan, then officially import it into Canada.
