Thanks for that Jen - yes, I think I will take the preemptive step and get the RCMP check done in person in Canada in July. If CIC don't request it then it's only $58 wasted, but if they do then it'll be worth about $300 and a month of my life, which is what it'll cost for me to get it sorted...

This is true at the application stage, but during the course of processing it is not unknown for CIC to request a full check, which you personally have to get done as it requires your fingerprints. Because it's only required at their discretion you don't have to get one at the time of making...
