Me too. I have to attend a conference. Don't want my passport stuck with them. However, I think I read somewhere in the forum if you attach a letter mentioning that you need the passport to travel, they send the passport with visa quickly.

I guess CIC will shut down PhD Stream from January 2015. "The new PhD cap year began on May 1, 2014. These are the last applications we will accept under the current system before Express Entry launches in January 2015". http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/complete-applications.asp

From the timeline, it seems no one got passport request after May 4 (reset date). Most probably for our case, medical then security check will be done. I hope they won't ask for PCC again. It's a hassle!
