you are right..thats y i said it isn't necessarily a passport request.

based on my knowledge of interview cases from the forums, they do ask you to bring in your passport before the interview..obviously they will check your passport when you are going to the embassy and they do ask you to bring it along with other requested documents. I wouldn't get your hopes too...
