I know for me (also US citizen) we've been looking into cover me travel insurance by manulife . I am in Ontario, but I'm sure they'd offer that in Alberta also. It's pretty flexible, coverage from $15,000 all the way to $150,000 and you can choose a date range from when you want to be covered.

canada is SO much more expensive. at least double... and some things are very hard to find at the grocery. it makes me angry when I have my heart set on making a certain recipe and i can't find simple (or so I thought) ingredients. :(
