I applied under the NAFTA category as an intracompany transfer. I sent my application out to Buffalo on December 12 and just received my approval for the application today on January 20th. So a little over a month for me. And my work permit is valid until July of 2012.

I didn't apply within Canada and Buffalo (the Consulate's office I applied to) has a wait time of 1 month it says. If that takes too long though I might just go apply at a POE since I'm going back to Canada next month either way.

Regarding the cost of deportation, couldn't CIC add a security deposit of sorts onto the visa application. It would cover the cost of a plane ticket to the applicant's native country and if at the end of the probationary period the applicant was granted PR status they would receive the security...

Haven't moved yet but I was quite sad to find out they don't have grits in Canada. :( It's pretty big down here in the southern part of the USA.
