I would suggest you to get a good lawyer because having a lawyer is helpful like he/she can prepare you to talk in front of the board member. Lawyer will also let you know the bullet points from your story and weakness of your case as well.

Theoretically what you have said is right thing to do but practically it's very hard to do that way. We all are wasting valuable time of our lives without family. I'm ok with 25 months of processing time but if it takes longer than that it's not acceptable.
